Jesus Is Our BrotherA Story by Loretta EdwardsJesus Is Our Brother How do you feel about the virgin birth? Impossible? Against all the laws of nature? Unnecessary? Haven’t thought much about it? A sort of fairy tale? A slight exaggeration on the part of the writer to make it special? A lot of women fudge about who the father of their baby is. Joseph claimed Jesus and raised him, doesn’t that tell you something? It doesn’t seem important, Jesus was born like all of us and that makes him one of us. Or do you think that, if, God is Jesus’ father that sets Him apart from and above us? I’ve heard it all. I am always shocked, when the subject of the virgin birth of Jesus comes up in Bible study groups, at how many people scoff at Mary being a virgin. They have the upmost respect for Mary as a woman, as a wife, and as a Jewish mother. They believe in Jesus’ mission on earth, that He was sent from God to save humanity. They believe all of the mighty feats that He performed especially the healings attributed to His name. But it is against nature, it isn’t possible, for a woman to become pregnant by herself they argue. We need to know if this is true or if the Bible is coloring the facts. I have my own ideas pertaining to the virgin birth of Jesus. I will share and you can decide for yourself. I am aware of the medical facts. The sperm and ovary unite and a baby is formed. Without the sperm the ovary dies and there is no baby. Even in artificial insemination the doctors use a donor sperm. The same with test tube babies. In our Christian religion there are four important parts. {1] The virgin birth, making Jesus the son of God {2} His healing ministry, all the more believable because Jesus is God’s son {3} His death on the cross. Jesus the man died, Christ is indestructible {4} Jesus’ victory over death and return as the Jesus his disciples knew in a spiritual body. The fact that Jesus was God’s son and not Joseph’s doesn’t make Him any different than us. Talk about a fairy tale. Do you actually believe that the union of two tiny organisms, called sperm and ovary, are wise enough and potent enough to form fingers, toes, legs, arms, body, hair, fingernails, eyes to see, ears to hear, a mind to think, lungs to breath and all of the internal organs that we don’t know about, in nine short months and give us a perfectly formed baby human??? And even if this is true, where does the life for the baby come from? Do you claim that you created this masterpiece? All by yourselves? NO! We, every single one of us, are spiritual children of God. Without God we would not be here. Without God all life is impossible. Mary being a virgin does not make Jesus any different from the rest of us. In this one instance God eliminated the middle man, the human male. He could have also eliminated the middle woman, the human female because God does not need human help to create His spiritual children. All children come from and belong to God. Jesus informed the people of His time period that God is their loving Father. Jesus brought a god that they feared down to an idea that they could understand. We have learned that our Creator is our Father-Mother-God the Only Creator and Jesus is our older brother. Is it so hard to realize that God can use stones or straw or any material that HE chooses to create HIS children? When a woman becomes pregnant we say that she has conceived. Have you considered what the word conceive means? To believe; imagined; think; to form in the mind. Doesn’t that make us more a thought form in the mind of God that a human being? God is our Father, Mother, God. We are related to God as divine idea to divine Mind. With this in mind-that we are thoughts in God’s mind-and the truth that Jesus taught-“Know ye not that you are gods and the works that I do you can do; and do better”-doesn’t accepting the virgin birth seem natural? As we are as much God’s children as Jesus, can’t you understand how we can live happy, healthy, lives and like our elder brother help others to do the same? The big difference between Jesus and us is not the virgin birth. It is that Jesus put God first and did everything He was asked to do. We don’t give our Father much thought until we need His help. I have no doubt in my mind that Mary was a virgin when Jesus was conceived and that God is His Father, and also ours. 815 words Loretta Ellen Edwards © 2017 Loretta Edwards |
