Necessary?

A Story by Loretta Edwards

Necessary?

I found this in a book many years ago. It impressed me then and still does. What do you think? “Spiritual mind treatment is scientific. It does not deny that people are sick. If they are not sick, for what reason would we be trying to heal them? It is very evident that suffering exists in human experience, but to say that it has to exist is a different thing.”

What is this saying? That suffering is unnecessary? Isn’t sickness a necessary part of our human, earthly life? Everyone that I know is sick or unhappy. How are you feeling? Wouldn’t it be great if we could track sickness back to its source and eradicate it completely!

The first time trouble is mentioned in the Bible is when God threw Adam and Eve out of Eden, with a ‘curse’ for them and their children. As God already created spiritual children, it isn’t logical that He would recreate another batch of children out of dirt and a rib. Therefore, I believe the Eden story is an allegory. Even if it is historically correct, - surely the curse would be null and void after the flood destroyed all living creatures. We are now Noah’s off-spring.

Maybe God had His reasons for creating sickness along with the other good things in the beginning. I don’t believe this at all, but maybe. Maybe for punishment for sin? Or to get our attention? How can we appreciate good health if we have never experienced severe illness? However, if, suffering is God created and God ordained: how do we have the audacity to even attempt to heal God’s creation? What God created lasts forever!

Perhaps one of God’s angels got a “God complex,” left heaven, came to earth to set up a “Kingdom of sin, sickness and evil”? Possible, but don’t you think that God would have revoked all of Satan’s ‘angel powers’ before allowing Satan to leave heaven? You don’t believe that Satan has power great enough to oppose or to fight against God? Where would such great power come from? God is the only power, the only creator.

If, it is God’s will for humans to suffer, what right did Jesus have to heal the sick; raise the dead; flaunt man-made Sabbath laws; turn the sacrificial animals loose? Didn’t Jesus come to reveal God’s Laws to us?

We are the image and likeness of our Father God. When we stand in front of the mirror and comb our hair, our image can’t decide to brush its teeth instead. As God’s image we can only do what God, the original, does. Can our Father suffer sickness of any kind? Vomit, have pains, break bones, take to His bed and call 911? Can we do what God can’t do? Actually, it takes a miracle to be sick when God isn’t. The God within keeps us healthy and happy, IF, we allow Him. The word miracle is an attempt to excuse our ignorance of divine law. God is infinite Mind; Spirit: and man is idea, reflection, expression. Everything happens for you; not to you. The only thing you have to heal is the belief that there is anything to heal.

Do you trust in the goodness of God’s will? If so, what are you going to do with this belief?
