![]() Two Plus TwouA Story by Loretta EdwardsTwo Plus Two How many times were you told that two plus two equal four before 2 you realized that any way it is presented the answer is the same? +2 Whether it was written as 2 + 2 = 4 or as two and two are four or __ even as 2 x 2 the answer is always the same four. 4 It was hard to learn the equation when you were a child of six years old and didn’t quite comprehend that a number on paper could represent any number of things that were important to you. Like: 2 candy bars for you and 2 for a friend equal four candy bars. Or that you and a friend equal two kids and two ice cream cones equal two very happy kids. You are older now and you don’t agonize over your answer any more. There is no hesitation nor do you worry that you might be wrong. Likely you don’t even give the problem any thought, the right answer comes as second nature, an instinct, a definite knowing. Looking back you have to laugh at the struggle that young child had in learning something so basic and something we use every day in so many ways. Of course, at the time, the child thinks, “This is so hard! I’ll never be able to learn all of this. Why do I need to know? What will it ever do for me anyway?” Now we know how we couldn’t get through our day ignorant of basic math. Buying our groceries, paying our rent and utilities, and all the rest we have to deal with. How often do we need to be told; how many ways do we need to hear the same truth repeated; before we know, completely, without doubt creeping in; that “God Loves You.” For some reason we find this hard to believe. Sure we say it; we repeat it to others; we listen to it in church; we even think that we believe-but-we can believe the false promises the politician makes to get elected before we can fully accept the truth in the promise of God’s unconditional love for each one of us. Perhaps it is because life has been hard for us. Maybe we have been plagued with illness, or we haven’t found a job we like, or we like what we do but it doesn’t pay enough to keep is above the poverty level. We haven’t found the someone we want to spend the rest of our life with, or our spouse is no longer the person we married. I am sure each one of us can make a long list of reasons why we are not happy. And if we are not happy-and IF God is All Powerful and Loving-then why are we suffering? An age old question. Could it be, like the six year old child, we think, “This is too hard!” We think, ”No one is perfect, so what is the use to try?” The quotes, “Into every life a little rain must fall.” Makes us think that we have to expect problems. ”Good guys finish last,” so we have to strike before we are struck. “We have to play the cards we are dealt.” So we don’t have much control over life, this we understand and relate to. This is the way that we see life. Quotes from the Bible like, “The sun shall not smite thee be day nor the moon by night,” are not that easy to accept. Didn’t we get a sunburn when we are out in the noon day sun? " which doctors are quick to tell us might turn into skin cancer? Any policeman will tell you that crime, of all kinds, escalate when the moon is full. Doesn’t that negate the promise? We look around at the confusion and chaos in the world and we wonder if there is any way it can be reclaimed. When we read, “The meek shall inherit the earth,” we say, “Yes, but who wants it?” Therefore we tend to gloss over and ignore this guarantee. We think it is an outdated, useless, quote that is no longer relevant for today. God’s promises are neither false, foolish, deceiving nor misleading. IF, we don’t acknowledge them we are only hurting ourselves. Truth translated from the Greek means, “reality opposed to mere appearance or false pretense.” God is a better teacher than the most learned human being. This is where our problems start. We don’t think seriously about what we believe. We allow others to influence the way we look at life. The life we lead is a product of what we believe. Your life will improve when you take control and learn the basic rules. “Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added unto you.” ”Ask and it will be given you, seek and you will find, knock and it will be opened to you” (Matt 6:33 +7:7) “Ask believing that you have received it, and it will be yours” (Mark 11:24) and “It is the Fathers good pleasure to give you the kingdom” (Luke 11: 32) These are not idle promises. Study them. Use them. Then put the rules, from the next page, up on your refrigerator for future reference. Also to remind you that God really does love you and problems are of your own making. Practice until you are as confident; as comfortable with God’s promises as you are with 2 +2 =4 and your life will become a heaven on earth 924 words Loretta Ellen Edwards
