A Poem by Ernie Roman

"

On the corner of

Copia and Montana
don’t walk she sees
sitting idly
comfortably on
concrete curbs
cold that day
the elementary school
who translated as high view
saw generations grow
old
many like
her
parents once
dreamt of hope
faded away in second grade
final semester math unit exam
ten percent
graded
half that
gone to high school
before parenthood
main goal
sad painted faces
in red ink
daily reminder
runaway
time until who finds
her
on the corner of
a strange neighborhood
watch
the wrist
time
wasted
contemplated
washed away
like childhood
sandboxes
on transmission oil
on the corner of
her room
make graves for bad grades
dig deeper
drown away
sorrows
like dad does
make love
like mom does
strangers in
out
late at night
like voices
heard from
closed grocery doors
with red light
internal conversations
deteriorate
her thoughts
shaken by honks
sign says walk
on the corner of
Copia and Montana

This a a wonderful portrait of a minority, sensititve and sincerely emotional, I enjoyed very much. Especially I loved this: internal conversations
deteriorate
her thoughts
shaken by honks
sign says walk
on the corner of
Copia and Montana ------such a poignant message!
