The Long Trek

The Long Trek

A Poem by Jonathan Matthews
"

Turtle, Turtle.

"
crossing the street in endless fear,
armor mounted on his shoulder,
he steps on the path which begins to sear
his feet with ancient patterns of meandering chasms.

Looking one way his thoughts shot forward
to what he might encounter within the midst of the trail.
Looking t'other way he begins his long treck toward
the other side of the street.

Behold a car had come by,
frightened the turtle sped up his pace.
The car did not see him, nor did it try
to swerve and respect the turtle's place.

Over the top of the turtle it grazed.
As we observe the carnage from above
we discover that the turtle was quite dazed.
He continued on his trek.
