Poetry HaterA Poem by Jonathan MatthewsA poem about hating poetry
I think it's interesting what most poets say,
How they express what they think in a roundabout way. And when they say things in magniloquence pure Most people don't get it, I know it fore sure. Shakespeare is surely one of these kind, With meter and language above most people's minds. Emerson, Longfellow, Frost, and Thoreau; These, among others, confuse people so. But then there are poets like the great Dr. Seuss. His language is easy and really quite loose. His poems are simple with no hidden message, But he brings on a story within every passage. But his poems are childish, and not for most people, They might be real great if they just weren't so simple. And then there are others who really depress, With feelings of darkness these poems impress. Poe is the perfect example of these. Poems of suspense and dark entities. His poems are for people who aren't mentally sound, Of death and destruction and horrors unbound. Those poems are dark and a little too creepy And they keep me awake when I am so sleepy. But still there are more whose randomness kills; Too sloppy, too funny, and too immature still. The essence of this is in Shel Silverstein Whose whimsical humor's in ev'ry next line. I still haven't found the right sort of rhyme That which isn't a complete waste of time. Of all that I've read they're lacking in interest. There really are none that I think is best. So poetry really, you do understand, Is the one thing on earth I can't, in fact, stand. © 2010 Jonathan Matthews |
