Chapter 31

Rene stepped up to the podium that was erected in the middle of the balcony. She looked at the large crowd of people cheering and screaming. She gave another sigh, looking at the hundreds of people. She swallowed nervously.

"Um...hello,"Rene said into the microphone and the crowd got quiet."My name is Rene. I am going to be your queen soon."

"Why is she pointing out the obvious?"Taira asked.

"Shut up!"Amber said angrily, as Rene looked back at Taira angrily.

"She heard you,"Ralph pointed out.

Rene put one hand on the cheek that Ralph ahd kissed and she was filled with courage.

"I will tell you now,"Rene said,"that I am not my grandmother, Queen Sandra, or my mother, Queen Shayla. I will usher in a new age of prosperity in my own way! A way that will not allow the sacrifice of milliions in our army to go to waste. A way that will keep our kingdom's name said proudly from the mouths of today's generation and the next ten to come! My way will keep people off the streets and instead, put them in homes where they belong! Our kingdom's name will be said with pride by our allies and in fear by our enemies! I intend to keep our kingdom in an age of prosperity, just like the two queens before me have. No-I do not intend to-I will keep us in an age of prosperity, where war among other countries and even among ourselves is unheard of! I am Princess Rene, and I will be as great a queen as my grandmother and om, if not better than both of them!"

"Did she rehears this?"Ralph asked as the crowd went wild with excitement and happiness.

"No, she didn't,"Amber said."She actually told me that she had no idea what to say-"

"What are they cheering?"Taira asked suddenly, and the others fell quiet.

In the silence amongst themselves, the chorus of "Long live Rene" was heard echoing all throughout the crowd.

Rene looked at all of the tiny faces in the crowd and saw many people crying with excitement and, for a good minute, Rene felt like crying too.

This moment was ruined, however, by the strange sensation that she was about to fall. She felt someone grab her and pull her backwards inside the palace.. She looked outside and saw the balcony that she had just been standing on plummet to the ground.

"Well, well, dear sister, aren't you lucky?"a voice said from the doorway of the room and everyone turned quickly.

"Angel!"

Michael, Roran, and Daniel watched in horror as the balcony fell, and, assuming where it had been, crushed some poor people about a football field's length ahead of them.

"Let's go!"Roran said, starting to rush forward. Michael grabbed his arm.

"Go where? What can we do?"Michael asked.

"Ralph's there!"Daniel said,"And so is Taira! Besides, we have to make sure that Rene is okay!"

"Alright,"Michael said and he, Roran and Daniel began pushing their way through the crowd of screaming and fleeing people to the castle.

"Angel, what are you doing?"Rene asked quietly, watching  Angel walk towards her slowly, a smile on her face.

"I wanted to watch your speech of course,"Angel said.

"Then why aren't you dressed up? Aren't you supposed to look nice at social events?"Taira asked angrily.

"Why, dear sister, I am dressed nicely,"Angel insisted. Actually, she was just wearing a t-shirt with a red skull on the back and some jeans.

"Yeah, right,"Amber said, picking herself up off the floor. It had been she that had realized that the balcony was about to fall and had quickly saved Rene.

"I'm glad you agree,"Angel said.

"What are you doing here?"Taira demanded.

"Like I said-"

"Don't lie to me!"Taira said angrily, stepping towards Angel."You came here to see if Rene died, didn't you?"

Angel's eyes flashed dangerously.

"Yes, I did,"Angel admitted. Immediatly, Ralph, Amber, and Taira stepped in front of Rene.

"You'll have to get through us first!"Amber said.

"That'll be easy,"Angel said and she stepped towards them.

With a wild cry, Taira charged towards Angel. Angel, however, lunged at Taira unexpectedly and picked her up by the hair. Taira gave a cry of pain and began to try and break free. Angel pulled a knife out of her pocket and held it to Taira's throat.

"Rene, surrender the throne to me,"Angel said, looking at Rene,"Or Taira dies."

"Don't do it!"Taira said immediatly.

"Stop!"Rene pleaded, stepping forward."Leave her alone!"

"Surrender, or she'll die,"Angel said quietly with a grin.

"How could you threaten to kill your own sister?!"Ralph yelled in disbelief."You're a monster!"

Angel laughed.

"Rene's the monster,"Angel said,"She's the one willing to let her own sister die for her own selfishness!"

"But-"Rene said.

"Don't!"Taira said."I would rather die knowing that you were going to take the throne, than live having to watch and see this travesty of a person take it!"

"You little brat!"Angel said.

Suddenly, the door flew open behind Angel and Michael, Daniel, and Roran rushed in.

"Taira!"Michael said, starting forward.

"Kepp moving and I'll kill her!"Angel warned.

Michael stopped and looked at Taira, who, without Angel seeing, winked at him.

"Woe is me,"Taira said dramatically,"here to die at such a young age, whatever shall I do? Oh that's right-this!"

Taira swung her foot as hard as she cpuld and kicked Angel in the stomach. Angel dropped her and Michael immediatly tackled Angel, keeping her pinned to the ground.

"Guys, go!"Michael ordered."I'll keep her here! Get Rene and Taira to safety!"

"But, Michael-!"Taira objected.

"Go!"Michael ordered and he watched as Amber pulld Rene out of the room, followed by Daniel, Roran, and Taira, who was being pulled along by Daniel because she was resisting. He saw her outstretch her hand towards him right before Roran closed the door.

Suddenly, he felt himself get pushed off of Angel and he quickly stood up and saw her galring at him, her knife raised dangerously.

"Ok. you little swine,"Angel said angrily,"Let's see just how brave a commoner like you really is!"
