Onion Rings

Onion Rings

A Chapter by Edwina
"

A loving man fetches a snack for his new lady love, and gets more than he bargained for.

Daniel drove to Hyattsville to buy Brenda some onion rings at The Howard Johnson's. She was a lacto ovo vegetarian, but loved onion rings for an occasional treat. As usual, the April rains had begun in earnest, and visibility was poor. He drove as carefully as he could after fetching the rings, and two orange freezes. As he approached the intersection with a green light bobbing in the wind he was struck broadside by a pick up truck, and his car was slammed into the corner of an auto supply shop.

He was knocked unconscious, covered with the spilled contents of two orange freezes, and the onion rings were dumped onto the floor. When he awoke in the hospital 2 days later, he learned that the young male driver of the truck had been killed. Brenda came to see him on day 5. He had a hairline fracture on the left side of his skull just above the ear, a broken collar bone, 4 broken ribs, a mangled knee, deep gash on his left cheek that required 23 stitches, and a spinal bruise with numbness. He would remain in the hospital for 3 weeks "getting repairs" and told Brenda not to worry about him.

But she did worry. His nurse was young, and busty. Brenda wanted Daniel home. She wanted him on a cane "as soon as possible" so that he could hang it up forever.

The police chief delivered the bad news to Daniel. He was off the force due to medical conditions. Permanently. However, a detective offered him a desk job with higher pay, and benefits after he attended classes for a few months. It wasn't a typical desk job. It was more like being a "top secret spy for keeping corruption to an all time low in the county." Daniel loved the idea. And his new "boss to be" wore a trench coat.

Daniel was a Scorpio. Right up his alley. Nabbing the bad guys. He had been a beat cop, night rounds, peace keeper for 10 years in Riverdale. Something new had dropped into his lap all because Brenda liked onion rings.

After a brief encounter with his blond hot "therapy" nurse Daniel returned to his rented house on Tuckerman street. He wanted to make sure that his spinal injury didn't affect his "Ding Fodd". The nurse was all to happy to oblige him. He didn't want to let Brenda down in "any way." The nurse went on to marry a brain surgeon.
