Family

Family

A Poem by 3thanmotionless

Daddy what are you doing?
Daddy don't hit mommy

Is this what it means to be a man?
Is this what it means to love?
Does 'til death really count
If you send her to heaven above?

Few years past,
few scars faded
I sill can't get the words out of my head
Five fingered insults to put me to sleep
to alcohol soaked nightmares and blood on the sheets

Please tell me father
What ever happened to family?

This conveys a lot of pain … a lot of failed expectations … struck a nerve.
Perhaps there may be no greater kind of human betrayal than a parent's injury to the family - that a parent's brutality directed against one is lacerates every family member, and it is the rendering of a kind of injury that does not ever heal.
Throughout man’s history, too many males seem to be accommodated in such a way as to willfully permit them to avoid the kind of full maturity and responsibility that would otherwise foster more dignified, responsible, compassionate, and civilized conduct. Such maturity is left to the majority of females. They seem to be the ones who nurture, who support, who encourage and, paradoxically, who receive the five-fingered insults. You’ve asked right questions–
Is this what it means to be a man?
Is this what it means to love?

Right away, upon reading them I answered, “Of course not”. A grown man, a good man, a real man, no matter his state of mind and even if he possesses the means to commit violence, never does so against those that he says he loves. To do so lessens him as a man, and makes him more of a monster.
