Halloween Kille

Halloween Kille

A Story by Emmy Cannon
"

Catching killers wasn't in the teen description. Everest Jones and her obsession with the Halloween Killer must help catch this horrifying killer.

"

The fact that its Halloween scares everyone in the small town of Lucifer. Not because of the costumes. We're not a religious town we just kind of have a yearly, annual killer called the Halloween Killer. We figured out it was him about twenty years ago when he first started.

The Halloween Killer kills in two different ways and he changes it every year. Last year he killed a group of teens but left a single witness with no memory and his signature a pumpkin with a smiley carved into the witnesses chest. Two years ago though was new. He burnt down the mayors office and killed the mayors security guard. Yet weird thing was the body hadn't been burnt to shreds like the rest of the house. Weird eh?

I guess I should explain myself I'm Everest, Everest Jones. Daughter of the sheriff, sister of the school jock and friend of everyone. Blonde haired, one green eye and one a bright pink because of a birth defect no one knows, white as a ghost and all around a nice looking person.

Well this year will be no different than another year. I'll hide in my room with the windows boarded and my door lock. But I have a gut feeling something will happen causing a lot of attention toward me. Yet I ignore the feeling and go on about my day at school, Lucifer High.

"Everest! Thank god I found you! Come see this!" A voice screamed down the hall. It was Dylan my close friend. A little too close. Myself and Dylan last summer ended up getting to close to fast.

He was waving me down running down the hall. I ran after him and stopped at the message wall. The message wall was for people that had secrete messages to tell but couldn't do it face to face.

The message wall was covered in blood with a riddle meant for me.

"Everest, You keep updated on my tracks, but you lack one thing, the pumpkin. HK."

What in the blue... What is that suppose to mean? And why me? And why the pumpkin it's his signature.

"You seem more amused than scared." Dylan said as I gazed at the wall almost fantasized by it.

"EVEREST! GET AWAY FROM THAT!" Kealon yelled. Kealon was my brother, the jock.

The detective was behind him. Surprisingly it was a new detective, guess Shelly had enough.

"Everest are you okay?" The detective asked.

"Fine. I'm just amused by the fact that he reached out to me. But why?" I said. Kealon dragged me to the office so we were out of the crowd the surround us.

"Everest what did you mean by amused?" The detective asked pulling out his black note book.

"Well I've been doing research on him or her trying to figure out and I left out a point. The pumpkin. What does it mean?" I said going into my bag pulling out most of my research. The detective was shocked on how big the file was.

"Is this what you do in your spare time?" He asked.

"She has a minor obsession." Kealon said.

"No it's just this killer has been doing this for 20 years. It raised questions I wanted answer too. So far I figured out stuff like his probal age which is most likely between 36 and 50. He's probably in the construction industry or retired but still has actus to everything. He has a muscular build so he acts young. And he probably lives somewhere where he can plan in peace and quiet.” I said pulling out my notes which had scribbles and “X”’s all over them.

The detective took the notes and put them in his bag. I jumped up out of the uncomfortable office chair and went to grab his bag.

“Um what do you think you’re doing?” He asked in one of the more rude ways.

“You took my notes! Those are my property with my hand writing and research!” I yelled.

“No. You hid research from the police who have been working on this case for twenty years. You’re actually under arrest for obstruction of justice.” He turn bringing out his handcuffs and putting my hands behind my back cuffing them as tight as possible.

“Hey! Uncuff her! She didn’t do anything bad!” Kealon yelled.

He was too late though I was being dragged down the hallways struggling to get free saying this was a load of crap and that all I did was some research of my own.

Put into the back of a cop car and still fighting the cop saying it wasn’t obstruction of justice.

Dragged out of the cop car into the station where rumor spread quickly as everyone saw me put into an interrogation room with the one and only detective himself.

“How many years have you been doing this research? How many hours are you out on your own? How many times a week do you bend for the chance to be taken and craved!?” He said getting more and more angrier.

“First of all it was in my grade 10 year. We were suppose to do a project on a statewide case in Law. So I choose this one since it was local and find out more. And I found out a lot more than just those. But heres the thing between me and the cops. I kept my research private. In a secret place. No one can find it.” I said looking into his eyes and seeing something I bet no one could see.

“Fine. Lets compromise. You give us more information and we won’t use you as bait to catch him.” He said looking right back. My eyes widen in complete anger.

“You can’t do that! Besides he wouldn’t hurt me! He’s sick and wants to keep his muse in my eyes. Putting me out there would be useless. “ I said loudly and proudly.

“Fine. How about…”

“How about none of my kids being arrested in the middle of a school day for a crime that doesn’t even make sense when all Everest was doing was doing research surprisingly you idiots couldn’t figure out. Now uncuff her before I kick you out of my station.” My mom said slamming open the door.

“Heres the key, do it yourself Mama.” He said getting up throwing the key at her and walking out of the cold dimly lit room. My mom uncuffed me and sat across from me.

“You okay?” She asked. I nodded feeling the blood go back to my hands.

“Who is he? New detective?” I asked.

“Oh you mean the tall dark haired buff think he knows everything detective. Yeah he’s the new one and his name is surprisingly Leo Cravenal.” She said. I rolled my eyes and leaned back.

“He’s kind of a dick.” I said. My mom chuckled and agreed.

“But he had a few points. If we put you out there tonight he might come after you. I know its dangerous but since he knows you adore his work maybe he will come after you to show himself.” She said reaching for my hands. I flew up in the air with so many questions.

“Put me out there! On the streets! So you guys can catch him! Mom are you going crazy?” I said pacing back and forth.

“Honey I know but its been twenty years. This may be the only chance we have.” She said.

She had a point. I mean no kid has ever been trick or treating and no kid has ever dressed up. Theres no halloween spirit in this sad poor scared town. Maybe its time to change that.

“Fine I’ll do it. But only for the town not that stupid detective. But I want to be able to talk to someone the whole time.” I said. My mom agreed and I choose the one person who has never left my side.

***

Hours later and night was upon us. I was hooked up to a mic so I could talk to Dylan, and a tracker was stuck in my ear so if something goes wrong they know where I am.

“You ready Honey?” My mom asked. I nodded and I was really scared, like really really scared.

Night fell and I left my house starting to  walk down the street with my “headphones” in my head.

“You okay?” Dylan asked.

“I’m okay, just scared really wishing I wasn’t doing this. But yeah I’m almost there.”  I said looking around.

“Okay well. Remember that time in Mr. James class where we had to talk about the high potunese and he said ‘Man I really wish I was high on potunese.’ and then Stoner Steven said ‘I can sell you some.’ and the whole class just erupted in laughter.” Dylan said almost crying of laughter.

“Yes I remember that.” I said laughing. My laughter was interrupted though.

By a hand covering my mouth. It was a really familiar smell. It smelt of… Pumpkin. I struggled and he turned me around and I looked straight into his eyes and saw… A killer.

“Hello Everest. Nice to meet you finally. I swear I won’t hurt you but if anyone tries to hurt me I will kill you and add to my kill count.” He said setting my mouth free. I couldn’t scream its like I was numb.

“Now let me tell you something. I kill for the thrill and waiting all year round just builds up so much thrill reason why I change up my M.O. It’s more fun. And you’re mom and all of the detectives from around the world have tried to get even close to my age and where you just guess and you’re always right.” He said stroking my face.

“I was right, I’m always right. But just turn yourself in. You’re story is almost ending by death.” I said smeling his old grimy breath. He was at least 50 and had a muscular build. Why did I have to be so right?

“If I do that, I won’t be able to…”

He was cut off by the sirens coming closers to us. He then grabbed me by the neck holding a knife to my throat.

“EVEREST!” My mom screamed with terror.

“Ah, ah, ah Mommy. Come any closer and this knife goes straight through her neck and into her brain.” He said holding the knife upwards towards my brain.

I was trembling with fear. I didn’t know that this was how it end.

“Please, don’t, she and Kealon are all I have. William, please.” She said putting her gun to the ground.

WILLIAM! YOU MEAN WILLIAM MYERS! What! How did I miss that?!

“I thought you died 20 years ago! Thats why they ruled you out as a suspect!” I said struggling to get free.

“We did until the message on the wall to you appeared. William was the only one in the whole school who talked in riddles. He was ruled out because of the death but his teeth were all pulled out and finger prints were cut off. You’re smart William but its game over. You’re done. So just let her go.” My mom said signaling with her eyes by blinking three times to shoot in the knee cap. Then BOOM!

The shoot was fired and I made my run for it towards my mom who had open arms.

“Son of a dingle!” He screamed dropping to the ground.

The arrest was made and everyone was set free of the grip of the Halloween Killer. We were able to be trick or treater's, we were able to be free to go out and decorate our houses. We didn’t need boarders, we now had the light of the Halloween Spirit back in Lucifer.
