The Runner and The Lover

The Runner and The Lover

A Story by Emily Cannon

They say the difference between the runner and the lover is that the runner runs away from emotions and the lover tries everything to bring the runner home. Both get hurt in difference ways, both love each other unconditionally, they just show it in different ways. Months ago the runner ran away from home, farther then she has done in all her time. She went from her small home town to the biggest city in a different state. The night she left scared her family, she just got up and walked out in the middle of the night. Her mother called the lover crying;
"She's gone, she left, the note said goodbye."
The lover knew her like the back of his hand, she was his other half. He packed up and left a little while after to find her and bring her home. He felt like it was a duty to save her from whatever she was running from. Maybe it was her abusive father who wasn't real blood, or her high school where she was beaten and buried emotionally from the bullying, or maybe she was running from herself and her demons within. He knew what her demons are like, how they can rip her apart while she sleeps. Just the nightmares he's heard about are awful, and as he cross state lines he thinks this is the best place for her to hide. But she can't hide from him, she never could.
They had a special bond the runner and the lover, met many years ago and never were separated. People say they are tied together by God even though they both don't believe that. He fights for her and will never let anyone or anything hurt her. She keeps him grounded some days with the touch he only gets, they both are a perfect match made in heaven. But now a day she's always running from something and he's trying to keep her grounded, yet the way he found her this time broke his heart.
After a days drive and showing her picture everywhere he decided to go to the bar, a bar called Lucky Shot. Why that bar? People say God needed him to find her at the moment he walked into the bar, cause boy was she in trouble. He walked into the bar, took of his jacket, sat at the bar, order a martini just to hear the words he didn't want to hear.
"Wow baby girl why you running? Came here to get loving right?"
The lover picked up his martini, walked over to the big grimy man holding his girl up against the wall and poured the glass over his head. Big Boy Grimy turned around and looked at him.
"Touch my girl again and I'll kill you." He said gripping his fist.
"This pretty thing is your girl? HA! Sorry kiddo but she's mine tonight."
Big Boy Grimy put a hand on his girl and the lover lost it and threw him into a wall and knocked the lights out of his head. The runner screamed in fear but the lover held her close and took her home, he saw the day old bruises and said he'd fix what her father did to her and he did. The father left the moment the lover pinned him up and gave him a speech. The lover and the runner slept on the couch together that night and the lover didn't sleep, he made sure she was safe cause thats what love is.
The man protects his girl, even if his girl is a runner and wants nothing to do with life. But she completes him in a way no one understand. The runner and the lover, a prefect tale.
