A Splash of Red in a World of WhiteA Story by 2ploverA man's last thoughts before death...The world had been gripped in the cold embrace of soft white powder and diamond like crystals for as long as everyone could remember. Each step you took through the biting chill, you knew may be your last, may be your final one in the world of living wakefulness. You never really understood how precious every moment you spend in the light of day truly is.... Until you're about to lose it.
He knew this of course, how could he not when the very evidence of his life slipping away was pooling around him in a deep rich red, staining pristine white with its colour and steam raising slightly from the heat. He swept forest green depths to gaze at the gathering red and the first thought that came to his fog covered mind was 'is that... Mine?' Many thoughts came to him but none was recollection of times past. Instead each was a single thought, a single idea that had no true meaning but to him... They all made sense. One thought kept returning to him however and it was probably the calmest 'I wonder... Is this the colour of roses? Or maybe... It’s the colour of life'
He could feel his lids become heavy with the need to sleep. Was he going to slip into an endless darkness or would he be met with a new light. He did not know but he wished he could stay. He wished he could see his little sister again and give her one last hug, wished he could see his best friend once more and laugh with him again but in all truth the person he truly wished to see one last time was his dearest love. He wanted to be able to see their bright smile, crystal like eyes, soft skin, hear their laugh, and feel their hands cupping his cheeks... He wanted to be able to hold them one last time before he left for good.
He gave a pained laugh as he finally let his eyes close, let the final breaths of air enter and leave his lungs in large slow draws and as the final beat of life in his chest sounded he whispered "I'll see you again... Someday..." © 2016 2ploverAuthor's Note
