friends?

friends?

A Poem by annie lee
"

age-old debate: remember Harry and Sally arguing about this?

"

Once someone asked me,

“Do you think a man and a woman can be close friends

without it ever becoming sexual?”

This annoys me a bit.

Of course.

One of my best friends is a man

with whom I worked at Ma Bell.

Why mess up a good friendship?

Why must every pairing lead ultimately

to the ol' horizontal polka?

Is that the quintessential human expression?

Isn't this act of copulation transcended by the music of Mozart,

the verses of Emily Dickinson,

the fantasy of Neil Gaiman,

the hilarity of Terry Pratchett,

the plays of Wilde,

the deeds of Mother Theresa?

Haven't we evolved to the point yet

that we can relegate this act

to the position of also-ran?

I can understand that dogs have that primary drive,

but they are

---  after all  ---

dogs.

You ask a woman and, of course, I can be friends with a man without wanting it to lead to the 'horizontal polka'--love that--but when I ask men they almost always disagree. That's the think about cats and dogs, I guess. I jest but just barely.

Love this! You are right, of course - there are so many ways to connect with another human being; only small, sad and empty minds can conceive of only a sexual relationship.
