Depression is a Type of Fire

Depression is a Type of Fire

A Poem by Jillian

I was going to write about fire

and how it's the only thing that can

make you jump out of a window,

assuming your fate

on the smooth cement of New York City.

Yet fire is not the case

and this physical element of

clouded lungs and burning eyes

does not compare to the cuts and callouses

of what's inside.

In the discountinuous pain of choosing

to step out of the window frame

you find yourself picturing below,

your body cold and your blood beating warm.

But a fear of fire is not required

when falling to a plastered death.

Reference to 9/11 much?? Or maybe you were in a fire, I don't know. What I do know is that the poem gives out a solemn tone to it and the vocabulary feeds in with that. The tone also helps with the movement, although the movement and flow is slower than this fire you're talking about, and so the movement and tone match very well. Or maybe the fire is metaphorical? I don't know, just think about it like this: this is how I thought after reading your poem. It's a good sign.
