Wind Among the StarsA Story by 23rdstarThe Shepard speaks to the wolves, dogs, and sheep of their duties themselves and each other...
The Shepard stood atop the hill looking down on the flocks. His strength unmatched but to most unknown. He leaned on no crook, on no staff. Upon his back hidden among the folds of his robes a sword and a gun. His killers soul tamed by the needs of the flocks, by the howling of the wolves, by the long strides of the dogs.
He bade the wolves to come to him from their dens, and bring their pups to him. These he blessed with the freedom of the wilds. They should cull the flocks for the weak, the sick, and the old. Those that would hold back the flock from their travels among the new lands that had yet to be seen. He sent them away with gun, sword and iron horses upon which to ride amongst the hills and far lands. To the dogs he called to come to his right hand. They came in force, their packs grand in their colors and stood before him heads held high. He told them that someday he would leave them behind, alone among the flocks and the packs of the wilds. They howled out their dismay to the skies. He charged them to keep the peace, and to set a example of courage always among all the animals. That they should never serve a evil master, nor allow needless harm to come to any. He bade them to leave him among the flocks. He walked among the flocks of sheep alone then, and told them of the secret of the future. He spoke quietly to them for the places as yet unfound among the worlds of the sky. He gave them love, patience, and faith in themselves. Their rams would stand strong among the wolves, and fight beside the fiercely loyal dogs. They should never loose hope in a day that could come where there would once be peace again. He left them all then. To seek out the enemy of life with his sword and pistol. Knowing that in the end he would fall before that which kills all. His song went out before him though a joy to all that would hear it's notes. He is out there now his long coat flowing behind him as the winds of the stars blow out from the far suns yet to be seen by our own eyes. © 2010 23rdstar |
