A life worth living

A life worth living

A Poem by Olivia Danielle

I build my sandcastles

I sled in the snow

I come home with cuts and bruises

That’s a day worth living

I’m surrounded by my family

As they sing me a song

I blow out my candles

That’s a day worth living

A bottle falls to the floor

I look in your bag for another

I dry my tears in secret

That’s a day worth living

I lose someone

A part of me is forever gone

The last thing I saw of them was a picture

That’s a day worth living

I meet you

I fall for you

You don’t feel the same

That’s a day worth living

I live alone

I sit on the floor of my new place

I dig my heels into my new carpet

That’s a day worth living

Life is short

Life is fleeting

Please give it a chance

This is a life worth living

This reminds me of my life in many ways - particularly that it speaks to me of alcoholism and certainly of emotional pain, but it is a life that is lived and therefore worth living. For me the happy thoughts of life are not from childhood memories, but from my experiences later in life that really have made life worth living.

The lines below from your poem capture my experiences from young to mid-adulthood. I am not sure what you describe is, in itself, a day worth living - and probably would not seem so to someone who had not experienced this. However, when you consider it in the context of the part it played on life's journey, it is absolutely a day (or a thousand days) worth living, for without it I would not have the healing I have today:

A bottle falls to the floor
I look in your bag for another
I dry my tears in secret
That’s a day worth living

Thank you for a poem that feels to me like radical compassion / radical acceptance and is beautifully written

I do agree dear Olivia.

I do like the above lines. Old wise words. "Make today special, yesterday is gone and tomorrow isn't here." Wonderful and worthwhile poetry shared.
