Flowers

Flowers

A Poem by Olivia Danielle

I put on a rose

I compulsively straightened the petals

I made sure every piece was the right shade of red

Every fold was impeccable and made sense

Or no sense, as long as it was perfect

I didn’t understand why it had to be like that

But I knew it did

I braided the green stem into my hair

The thorns pricked my neck

But it was worth it

Yellow pollen tickled my cheeks

I walked into the garden

I noticed all eyes were on me

Eyes of disapproval

My petals weren’t red enough?

As the flowers starred

The thorns began to draw blood

Some dripped onto the empty spots of my petals

I never noticed them until the other flowers did

Making them the perfect shade of red

One by one, they averted their gaze

I was in pain

But I was beautiful
