![]() Our storyA Poem by Olivia DanielleI watched you from the window Flipping through books Licking my finger, page by page Wondering if you were on the same one I was Your kind emerald eyes Your dark brown hair I pressed my hand against the window Waiting for you to do the same One year You left your jacket in my car I left my words in your head You walked home that night With your feet gliding across the pavement As if it were ice You thought of me How I held my index finger in one hand when I was nervous How I parted my hair differently everyday I drove home that night On the smooth road home I thought Thought about you How you twitch your eyebrows when I smile How you always smelled like a crackling fire We smiled Two years I told you to leave You told me to calm down I stopped the car and demanded you leave You said you wish you never knew me and left You walked home that night Tripping over stones on the gravel road You thought of me How I didn't understand you How I never listened to you I drove home that night On the bumpy road home I thought Thought about you How you spoke to me condescendingly How you never asked how I was We cried Three years We sat under a tree The leaves were dark emerald The tree was dark brown I told you how much I loved you You told me how much you loved me We lay down and looked at the stars dancing across the night sky Planning our futures Ten years She had your emerald eyes My rosy cheeks We kissed her goodnight Thought of how very safe we felt Eighty years We sat on the porch chair Bickered over little things Always ending in a kiss and a laugh I looked at you To me you were still the young boy in the library To you I was still the young girl with her hand on the glass I took my hand off the glass when I saw you turn to me I smiled at you and you smiled at me This will be our story, I thought But we’ll write it together © 2020 Olivia Danielle |
