Help

Help

A Poem by Courtney

Help
By definition, help is when you provide assistance to someone in need.
How are you helping when you topple buildings on them, telling them to hold their ground.
It’s hard to hold your ground when everyone seems to try to put you 6 feet underneath it.
They tell you to breathe as they push you farther into the depths of the water.
They cut your wings and push you off of the tallest building telling you to fly.

You learn to help yourself.
You learn how to rebuild those toppled over buildings.
You learn how to stand your ground and keep yourself above the surface of the water.
You grow new wings and learn how to fly.

Then the people who left you out in the cold get mad at you for learning how to keep yourself warm.

They get mad at you for not needing their help anymore.
They get mad at your for every time they kicked you down, you got up. Yeah, you cried, but only for a bit. You wiped your tears and helped yourself up. You helped yourself because you knew that nobody else would.
After all these years, you’ve helped yourself more than anyone ever could.
After all these years you learned how to hold yourself up. You learned your worth and won’t let anyone take you for less.
