Lesson Learned

Lesson Learned

A Poem by 1 Deep

I pray intensely to the Lord ‘cause I may see him soon.
Our lives are like flowers that wither the moment they bloom.
I saw my mother on the news and my cousin too.
Sometimes I sit and wonder what the world is coming to.

I've never felt a womans love but I have touched a corpse.
A black male labeled a thug, they lock us up for sport.
I wonder how long I'll remain free and stay alive-
Sometimes I walk straight up to death and stare deep in his eyes.
And ask him why he has it out for me and those I love-
He reached down in the ground and picked up a hand full of mud.
And said "from dust you came so to the dust you must return"
I said "I know, that's one of life's hardest lessons I've learned".

In my course as a student of medicine, the line of "I've never felt a womans love but I have touched a corpse." Particularly resonates with me, differently but the same. My "love" people stemmed out of seeing them at their most vulnerable stages in life. Or after life. No romantic passions, only the harsh truth of life and its fragility. Death can be cruel when teaching us.
