STONEHAM, Mass. - For many people, the ultimate partnership in life is marriage, a relationship that often constitutes the greatest eternal significance of a couple’s life together. But planning a wedding is a major undertaking that can overwhelm a couple struggling to balance the needs of their guests with their hopes and desires for their special day.
As a flight attendant for a major airline, world traveler who has visited more than 55 countries, and a person who eloped herself, Peters has a unique perspective and expert knowledge on elopement. Her new book Elope: A Modern Elopement Guide for the Free-Spirited and Adventurous offers couples with adventurous elopement alternatives to traditional weddings. In her extraordinary look at elopement, Peters’ book serves as a comprehensive planning guide that opens the minds of couples to an array of exceptional experiences they can pursue to help celebrate their special day.
Peters explained, “Early in my life, I developed a love and passion for adventure travel, thanks to my parents, ones that really made me curious about the world. My goal with this book is to show couples that elopement isn’t an escape or excuse to forgo a traditional wedding. Instead, this book reveals the intimate and memorable experience that elopement can have through travel to adventurous places and serve as a remarkable way for them to celebrate their union.”
In fact, Elope: A Modern Elopement Guide for the Free-Spirited and Adventurous shares the experiences of 12 flight attendants who have eloped including their itineraries as well as nearly 200 hyperlinks to help couples with research. The book is full of off the beaten path locations and destinations as well as with unique stays, to give couples ideas from a treehouse in Costa Rica to a glass igloo in Norway.
“As soon as people get engaged, they become their own event planner and it can become overwhelming. This is one of the reasons I wrote the book " to give people a blueprint of how to forgo planning a big wedding and instead focusing on the fun stuff. The premise of the book is for couples to allow themselves to dream and plan their wedding day their way and not have the pressure of family politics or societal pressures. Planning an elopement is meant to be more intentional and focused than a traditional wedding,” explained Peters.
Peters writes from a lifetime and loving perspective of world travel. As a missionary kid, she spent her formative years in a boarding school in Bolivia, where she explored shallow riverbanks, learned Spanish, conversed with her parents over CB radio and hopped rides in single-engine airplanes to visit her parents in the jungle.
“My unconventional upbringing ignited a passion for independence and a thirst for global exploration, one that eventually propelled me toward a career as an international flight attendant,” added Peters.
In 2001, her path shifted following 911 and the World Trade Center tragedy. She seized the opportunity to move to Italy to study Italian. In 2013, she attended California’s renowned Brooks Institute of Photography and began to channel her love for photojournalism. This led to her work photographing the iconic Primal Quest Adventure Race in the Pacific Northwest and taking part in a travel writing workshop with renowned travel Writer Don George.
During this time, the stigma associated with elopement started to diminish, leading Peters to reunite with her first love Chris. Following a romantic courtship, they eloped in 2013 on a beach in St. Croix, USVI. Their decision to elope has fueled her passion to frame the love stories of other couples against breathtaking backdrops like Glacier National Park and Assateague Island National Seashore, long before adventure elopements became trendy.
As elopement surged in popularity in 2019 and became even more popular during the pandemic, Peters became a trailblazer in the elopement movement. During this time, she leveraged her vast experience in photographing adventure sports, destination weddings and her love for adventure and travel which led her to embark on this new book and share her expertise and enthusiasm for adventure elopements.
Elope: A Modern Elopement Guide for the Free-Spirited and Adventurous has already received considerable advanced praise from several elopement experts. For example, Cat Ekkelboom-White, founder of European Elopement Guide, notes that Peters’ book, “enables couples to navigate every aspect of elopement planning with confidence and ease…inspiring a totally different version of the perfect wedding day.”
In addition, Nick Edmundson, Founder, Wandering Weddings posted, “... An impeccable guide that makes planning an adventure elopement not just approachable, but utterly irresistible...”
