Scorched

Scorched

A Poem by Joslynn Decker

The embers pierce my skin

Sharp like knives

Yet I hang on

Just to be burnt down again

Surrounded in a cloud of smoke and tears

My lungs begin to clog

The pain is immense

I scream for help

My words pushed to the back of their minds

And another ember lands

upon my once smooth skin

A small fire inside

Reminds me of the pain

No longer can I scream

No longer can I wait

Praying for relief

No longer will I ache

No longer will the pain

Reside inside

For no longer can I fight the flame

Burning every memory

Every thought

Of love, laughter, and life

Of hope

Because no longer will I fight

For what was mine

For what I deserved just as much

As the rest of you

No longer will you be able to take back the torches

you threw upon me

For we’ve already burned
