Monster

Monster

A Poem by Joslynn Decker

They hide in your closets and under the beds

Anxiously waiting

A turn of the knob

Lift of the covers

But you never do

You ask your mother to keep them away

In the darkest hours of the night they peer out

Studying every breath

Trying to understand

While you harbor in dreams

Waking with the same routine

With no haven left you must discover truth

Creeping out in the moonlight

You pull up your blankets

For it's known a beast such as this will attack

As you're spying, they're approaching

As you're screaming, they're smiling

Your fear of being eaten consumes you

Feeling their arms wrap around your body

Not cold and deadly, but warm and soft

Comforted

Embracing you with care, realizing they weren't monsters after all

Only human
