The Nightmare - Intro

My life is so perfect it could be a fairy tale. Not.

Sometimes I feel as if the world stops time for me to catch up, and speed up when I'm rushing ahead. It's as if everything in nature involves in something in my life. The stars represent the multiple times I've dreamed, the sun show the fire and passion of my soul, space holds all my secrets, and beyond, the sky reflects my inner feelings, and the moon is holder of all the hatred I kept. However, time itself seems unsteady, and I have to fix it every time. I remember the multiple times I've wished on one of my dream stars, and wished that my life would fit like a glove.

Surely, fate brought me upon one of my worst nightmares. A nightmare I seem to be struggling to conquer, a nightmare that knows how to beat me. If you knew my secret, if you knew my life, if you knew me you would understand why fate is a living, breathing nightmare. I hated the thought of it, and did everything to prevent this to happen. Of course, my plan fails, the only one in the world to fail on me, and makes me suffer weeks, months of torture. This is all because of one girl who I fell head-over-heels for, Gabriella Martin known as Gabby.

What's so bad on having a crush on your best friend? I'll tell ya something that will make you want me to go to hell, or not. My name happens to be Emily Howard, as in, I'm a girl. Okay, so maybe you've heard the story of a confused teen falling for their best friend, and the two gay teens live happily ever after. Oh hell with that! I'm not even sure if "happily ever after" is real in reality. Maybe that's why they only say it in fairy tales, movies, books, and not reality. I hate the thought of having to live a cliché, but guess what I think I am.

My story began on a late January of 2009. The snow started to leave, and life began to rise onto its feet, marching on with their held high, and a proud smile upon its face. Gabby was at a student council meeting, so I decided to go to the park a few blocks away from school. The sun was beaming above, but the winter wind chilled me. I'm not completely sure why I wanted to be outside, but I continued as if nothing was wrong. I wore my favorite jeans, they were pale blue, and Gabby wrote "Lucky" on the thigh of my right leg. It was in permanent red marker that stood out making me smile even bigger.

The park was barely empty, meaning only three people roamed around the decent park. Jungle gyms stood lonely, begging a child to play on it, instead of the snow. The swings squeaked as the breeze pushed it. Trees stood nakedly, rustling with each other’s branches. I smiled seeing a poorly built snowman with a rotten carrot nose in front of the fence that surrounded the park. I pushed some snow off a swing before I sat on the cold rubber. The chains felt like thick ice as I pressed my bare hands around the rusty chains. I sat still for a moment, taking in the silence, the cool air, the sun. I then shrugged off my book bag, placing it next to me on the ground, and began moving my legs so the swing took me higher off the ground.

My light brown hair flew behind me, the flashed past my cold, pale face as I went back and forth on the swing. My body felt light as a feather as I flew into the air. I looked to my right to see the fields, where kids would play football and baseball, quickly zoomed past. I stared at the sky, and I became blinded for a few seconds by the sun’s bright light. After blinking for a few seconds, and regained my sight, I stared in front of me to see a boy, named Brian Wesley, leaning against a tree, staring at me. I felt stiff, and my legs ceased it’s back and forth movement. The swing kept moving at full speed, unable to slow the pace, even if my legs froze. He then started to walk towards me with his hands in his pockets.

A large amount of saliva choked down my throat as he neared. He was the only boy who ever did this to me. I felt completely awkward with the whole situation of my body freezing up when he’s near. My palms started to sweat, another side effect, and my face burned. He was now a few feet away from me with a slight grin appearing on his bubbly lips. I tried to smile at him, but my nervous got the best of me keeping my lips still. His dark, blond, curly hair twisted over his forehead, curling into his dark green eyes. He wore our school uniform, a white long-sleeved shirt, black tie, navy blue vest, black pants, and shiny black shoes. It suited him perfectly with his rich-boy look. He even looked the slightest bit nerdy with his Ray-Bans glasses across his face.

“Hi Emily.” He greeted sheepishly. I was too busy staring at his glasses to acknowledge his greeting. “Emily?” His voice was a smidge louder, breaking my trance causing me to blink rapidly. “Hello.” He said once more with a wider grin.

I couldn’t squeeze a smile, but managed to say, “Hi Brian,” in a high-pitched squeak.

Brian smiles at me and walks a little closer. “So, what you doing over here in the park in this kind of weather?” he asked, shivering even though he wore a blazer, good enough to keep you warm.

“Just waiting for a friend is all.” I answer in a monotone voice. “What about you?”

He shrugs slightly. “Eh, just figured to find something better to do than to just stay home and read.” Read the boy says, read! The glasses didn’t make him nerdy; he made himself nerdy. I’ve never met a boy who would spend good quality time to read in his room, downstairs, or wherever he does his reading. This made me smile. He awkwardly looked around, and then looked back at me. “So who are you waiting for?”

“Gabby. She’s at a student council meeting.” I answer slowly. I shivered when a gust of wind blew up my shirt, making me feel awkward when it raised my shirt. Brian blushed slightly, looking down at his polished shoes. I heard my cell phone ring in my book bag. I grabbed it quickly, opened the second pocket, and pulled out my cell. I flung it open and answered, "Hello?"

"Hey Em! I'm out of the meeting. Where you at?" Gabby's sweet voice asked through the other line.

"I'm at the park. I'll be there in a minute or so." I answer quickly. "See ya!" I hung up and stood, flinging my book bag over my shoulder. "Well, see ya Brian." I say as I start to jog. That day was the day that started it all. This is the moment where I should have listened to Brian's calls of "Wait Emily!" instead of rushing to be at Gabby's side. That day started the nightmare.
