A poem about giving chase

Drive To Prison

Music is thumping, drink is flowing
having a great night out
See this girl staring at me
Checking me out no doubt

A couple of friends are getting in trouble
Doorman breaking up the fights
And once again we are kicked out of a club
Another end to one of my nights

Waiting outside the kebab shop
The girl walks past and winks
I have the audacity to ask for her number
At least see what she thinks

But as I leave to chase her
My friend grabs the neck of my shirt
“I hope your not ditching me mate
All for a piece of skirt”

I promised to drive him home
I shouldn’t have had so much to drink
But as the evening rolled on
I lost the ability to think

“Well we need to offer her a ride”
I said to my friend
His bloodshot eyes stare at me
His thinking starts to decend

We walk to my car, he trips on the floor
Pulls himself up by pulling on the door
We take our seats and start to give chase
To the girl that gave me a wink
I’ll offer her A nice ride home
I wonder what she’ll think

We see her walking alone
I speed up to get near
My mate grabs the wheel
“hey let me steer”
The girl turns in shock
As she hears screeching from the tyres
I try to pry my friends fingers
But they are attached like welded wires

An oncoming car has to swerve
to avoid our full beam light
The girl is hit by the oncoming car
And I witness the nightmarish sight

The body bounced off the ground
I could hear the CRACK
As several bones were broken
My friends arms finally slack

“we need to help that girl mate”
But all I could see were bars
Prison is where I would be heading
And I don’t see no other cars

So I drove away
the girl that winked is dead
My friend shot himself
from the images in his head

The other driver is in prison
For the murder that I caused
But there is no guilt on my mind
I barely even paused

Interesting and thought-provoking. I get to see and meet a lot of broken people who are in similar situations, through working for a criminal lawyer. So often, the wrong place at the wrong time leads to tragedy. Others, it hardly touches and their lives go on, causing more misery for their victims.
You've written a powerful piece of poetry and written it well. good stuff!

This is very intense. The power of your words is hardly missed by the reader. The emotion roller coaster had me on it. Wonderful.

Woahhh!
As always, I admire your stance love, I am reeling from this! The utter cycle of devastation in this is awe inspiring, the way it is recorded! You always take a poem, idea and mould into a whole story, amazing! xx

Great story telling, I really admire the mature way you cover the darker side of human experience! It's a subject that can so easily become cliché, but your narrative is thought provoking and engaging. I look forward to reading more!

Great, you just pump out so many great poems that state the real things in life. What happens under the shadows and in the bright lights of the cameras, na matter, you shed some light on it and make it so people know how life really is instead of fantisizing.

Interesting to hear the story from that point of view.

I enjoyed it from beginning to end.
I really enjoy your story telling
No need to worry champ, it wasn't your fault at all.
Keep up the solid work.

all because she winked...shame how innocent people suffer because of our mistakes. A real eye-opener...we should be careful with our actions, the repercussions might be dreadful...and girls, careful with those killer winks!
