Love LiesA Poem by sivanI love you, three words too generously misused- I loved you once but my love was abused. Was I just another beggar hungry for that which is you? Or of a higher class: the privileged and few? Did you abhor my efforts, did they make you run and hide, Should I have told the truth that day or have silently lied? I told you that I love you, and your response was parallel, And so began a bogus bond and untruths we would tell. I told you that I love you and at the time it was the true But now my love is for another and I waste that line on you. It’s like a safety net that holds us together, A raincoat: for all the bad weather. You tell me you love me when you think I’m going to cry, I tell you I love you right before I lie. In my mind I cheat on you constantly, Forming brief sentences unintentionally. I love you I hear you begin to say I say I love you and I walk away. © 2011 sivan
