Distraught by Erinu's ordeal, the four travel north and rest in Porto Cerro. When Erinu's bleeding baffles Berin, they meet Sceala, a local woman.

Sceala seems intrigued not by Glavino, but by Berin. Soon Berin finds the hardest battle is not from outside forces but from those within.

The Bacana army invade Porto Cerro, splitting Berin from his family, again.

Berin is captured again and accused on being a spy. When all seems lost, a friend returns with a sword set to alter the course of the war.
