His book was excellent.. I think it should be required reading in school. The piece you were referring to was in that book also. If i remember right.. he was asked to do a speech in the North when slavery was still legal in the South, and that is what he was referring too. What he witnessed, what he lived through.. and what he risked to learn to read, write, and leave is incredible!
