About Me

I am a mother of a son who has struggled emotionally with various conditions, including ADD, Tourettes and a multitude of mental impairments that will keep him from functioning as a normal independent adult. His IQ has always tested far below average. To protect his privacy I have chosen to create this account anonymously.
He graduated High School (barely) because of his IEP (individualized education program). English was his strongest subject but not grammar or writing, more reading and comprehension. That being said, he never was more than a C student in the subject. I had to edit his essays and book reports extensively. He could not express himself cohesively through the written word but always read far above his age level. The most unusual skill he showed without any training was an almost savant ability in chess. He won many tournaments as a child. His math teacher was also the head of the chess team, he barely passed her class but was the star player on the team. She could not understand how he could approach a game with such strategically advanced skills but not understand the most basic principles of mathematical problem solving.
Daydreamer is almost 21 and spends all his time reading. He will read anything from history and economic text books to classic literature, political thrillers and science fiction. We thought of this as an OCD symptom, as he keeps them all on bookshelves with an almost fanatical obsession with preservation and display. I know they all get read but have never been confident with his comprehension of the more technical subjects.
Recently he has taken up writing. I knew he was doing it but had little interest in reading it because of the excruciating grade school proof reading experiences I’d hoped were over for good. To my utter surprise, his writing is shockingly good, well structured and witty to boot. He has an amazing, under the circumstances, ability to structure his sentences with a vast command of the English language and almost flawless punctuation and grammar. This is not something you get a sense of when talking with him, at all.
This isn’t rocket science but, considering his dysfunctional situation, I wanted to share his work with objective writers and get insightful feedback.
