NOTE: My short stories are no longer posted here on this site. I have included a few on my new website http://conceding2kismet.weebly.com. Feel free to stop by and leave feedback. I will continue to peruse the site and hope to find more talented writers to enjoy!
I am complex. Or at least that's what the voices in my head tell me :-)
The name Inda Lauryn is obviously a pseudonym created to separate my fiction from my more scholarly endeavors. I forget where I read the first name. Lauryn is definitely a reference to Lauryn Hill and chosen because all the females in my family have middle names that begin with L. (Don't ask. Lauryn wasn't intended to look like a last name.)
Anyway, I have been writing since childhood, but did not start seriously considering the possibility of sharing my work as a profession until a few years ago. I do not restrict myself to any particular style or genre. I enjoy all types of writing but I am particularly a fan of short stories.
Although I have many influences and heroes within literature, I mostly take my cues from pop culture, particularly music. I enjoy writing about it and/or mentioning some of my musical faves in my work. So don't be surprised or put off when the names Lizz Wright, Cassandra Wilson and Minnie Riperton repeatedly crop up in my stories :-)
I have now self-published my experimental e-book Life Begins at 30: What I've Learned So Far and Why You Don't Care, available at lulu.com. You should go by and check it out.
What began as an experiment in writing challenges became a self-reflective examination of black women, pop culture and the media. Life Begins at 30 is a conversation exploring the mirror of the large and small screens, music and books as seen through the eyes of a media intellectual. One scholarly paper and one short story are offered as bonus material alongside the essays.
I finally got my first novel IN TIME just the way I like it and have made it available as an e-book for 6.95 at lulu.com. Hopefully, I'll soon have my personal webpage up and running and make some excerpts and short stories available as well. Please support indie authors like myself and check it out. Take care.
In Time
Amrita Lloyd desperately needs a change. Plotting her escape from a miserable California existence, she ends up in a Michigan college town working in a start up legal aid office. All is going well for her until she finds herself haunted by the memory of a woman, Ingrid, she thought she left behind. With Ingrids presence continuing to loom over her, Amrita must find a way to hold on to the newfound happiness she is forging with her friend EunJung Barton, boss Monique Carson, and boyfriend Kevin Patel. In this journey of self-discovery, one woman must come to terms with the trauma and demons of her past so that she has a chance at happiness with life and love in her future.
You are always so nice to me when it comes to your thoughts on the bits I post here. I feel bad because I'm hardly ever here to return the favor, but that changes today. I'm writing a little more than I've written in many months, so yer gonna be seeing a lot more of me here, and on your page. I owe you a lot of reading, and I aim to deliver.
Thanks for the web address and your encouragement. I enjoy your work, too... since music is an important part of my life, those kinds of references, as well as the general influence of music on writing, always draw me in.
I really wish that it would have just not let me post at all rather than putting that silly "Please No Embedding" as a comment from me. Anyway, thanks for your positive reviews, if you want to rock out go to youtube and search for the White Stripe's live version of their cover of Son House's Death Letter. I could hear this every day.
