According to research firm Strategy Analytics, in the fourth quarter
of 2017, Samsung’s share of the Chinese smartphone market was only 0.8%.
In contrast, Samsung’s market share in China was as high as 20% five
years ago. In the fourth quarter of last year, Samsung shipped 9.8
million smartphones in China, and for the first time experienced
quarterly shipments of less than 10 million.
In fact, in the Chinese market, Samsung’s market share in each
quarter of last year has been declining. Among them, the market share in
the first quarter was 3.1%, 2.7% in the second quarter, 2% in the third
quarter, and 0.8% in the fourth quarter. 2LHT-L5
According to another data, Samsung’s share of the smartphone market
in China was 2.1% in 2017, which is only one-fifth of that in 2013.
Market watchers said that although Samsung launched a new generation
of its flagship smart phone, the Galaxy S9, in China in March this year,
the high price (the retail price of the Galaxy S9+ is $839) may deter
Chinese consumers.
Strategic Analytics expects Samsung’s share of the Chinese smartphone
market to remain at around 0.8% in the first quarter of this year.
In the mid-end handset market, Samsung faces strong challenges from
China's smart phone manufacturers, such as Huawei, OPPO, vivo and
Xiaomi, all of whom have introduced more cost-effective handsets.
In addition to the Chinese market, Samsung's performance in the
Indian market is equally bad. In the fourth quarter of last year,
Samsung’s market share fell to 23.9% from 26.2% in the third quarter,
surpassed by China’s smart phone maker Xiaomi, ranking second.
Previously, Samsung had dominated the Indian smart phone market for six
years.
Industry observers said that although Samsung is still the world’s
most smart phone maker, Samsung’s share and influence will continue to
decline in the smart phone market in China and India.
