Writing as therapy to sooth the mind.

I'm curious how many of us that write are writing for one reason or another to sooth overworked, burdened, stressed out, bi polar, schizophrenic, OCD or any malady. How does it help? Problems? My own is bi polar disorder for life, complicated by late onset schizophrenia, caused (they think) from too many head traumas, (I've had 17 concussions most when I was in my 20s. I write alot, but poetry is a new thing. I struggle
