Re: Tell me why you write the genre you write.14 Years AgoI write memoir (true stories, well maybe embellished a bit) because it is what I know. Most are short stories (vignettes) that I hope to discover a theme to fill an entire memoir. Perhaps a series of essays, that connect as a whole. Still struggling with that aspect. For now, just getting ideas on paper.

Re: Tell me why you write the genre you write.14 Years AgoI write about animals and nature because that is what I know best. I write about science to improve scientific literacy. I write memoirs because when I was in the Peace Corps, people "back home" wanted to know what life was like, and the only I could make them understand was to draft the universe I had found myself in.
I write introspective pieces to learn about myself, and release the pain related to recovery from PTSD and severe crippling depression- it acts as a release valve on the pressure cooker. I write poetry because it is the other lnaguage of the Creator (the first being science). I am trying my hand at short stories to see if I can. Finally, I write erotica because it is just plain fun!

Re: Tell me why you write the genre you write.14 Years AgoI never have one specific genre. I write to get the characters out of my head. I never really know where they will lead me or how long the story will go. Hopefully one day a book will come from one of those ideas.

Re: Tell me why you write the genre you write.14 Years AgoI write fantasy and action because it lets me make a whole new world full of characters I wish that I could be. It allows me to represent a world long forgotten.

Re: Tell me why you write the genre you write.14 Years AgoI write fictional stories, with a twist of fantasy. I get bored with everyday, mundane life, so being able to throw supernatural creatures into everyday society makes life a little more interesting. It also gives me a way to channel my desires for such things to be real in a healthy fashion. :)

Re: Tell me why you write the genre you write.14 Years AgoI don't write in one genre.. but i do write in only one style, free form.. I known no other!
I wish I did.. I just write about whatever hits me .. ! |

Re: Tell me why you write the genre you write.14 Years AgoSupernatural/Fantasy for the simple fact I like to wrap myths and folklore into my writing and that genre allows me to do so. There's not much use for all the things I've memorized about legends and details, but with these stories I can add in bits that make them seem a little more real.

Re: Tell me why you write the genre you write.14 Years AgoI write poetry because it lets me express my emotions and lets me tell a story of my life.

Re: Tell me why you write the genre you write.14 Years AgoUm, well, I really only write poetry. That's just because I love the ebb and flow of the rhythm it creates. It's like playing music for your eyes and mind, and better because language is the only instrument I can play. XD The theme though, or general topic, of my poetry varies a lot. In the beginning, like, up until 3 years ago, I was heavily influenced by Poe so everything had a dark, melancholic feel to it. I really enjoyed it though, I found it peaceful to write of all these beautiful scenarios in my head. A haunted mansion with a dying garden. Unrequited love- all that.

Re: Tell me why you write the genre you write.14 Years AgoI write Surrealism because it is the only way I can express feelings in a visual way and poetry because it kinda flows for me (Although I've lacked inspiration in the last few days).

Re: Tell me why you write the genre you write.14 Years Agoi write a lot of literary fiction because it's really what i read most, so i'm familiar with its style, the rhythm of the story and the words. i think it's a genre that focuses heavily on characterization, something i always try to explore while writing. i find people extremely interesting so i like to delve into my characters' thoughts and motivations. it's a genre where really beautiful, descriptive language is acceptable and encouraged -- i just adore how lush english can get ("lolita" immediately comes to mind).
with poetry, i like the spontaneity and fun of it... sometimes, fiction writing can be a bit overwhelming... poetry is like a snack. :)

Re: Tell me why you write the genre you write.14 Years AgoTo Sara-
I own Lolita, but I haven't had the chance to read it yet. I am currently on Bram Stoker's Dracula. I agree that Literary fiction allows for the more unique and beautiful phrases to come into play. Those types of stories capture the reader with its real-life-like characters and scenes.

Re: Tell me why you write the genre you write.14 Years AgoDefinetly along the lines of science/fiction/fantasy if that makes any sense. For me it's bending or exagerating the rules of science in a fantasy. Okay I think I'll shut up now since I'm not making proper sense.

Re: Tell me why you write the genre you write.14 Years AgoI write science fiction because I love to go into the future and create what I think the world will be like. It gives me the freedom to invent new things like jetpacks and high-tech plasma guns, which I can give detailed descriptions of just out of my imagination. I can control how everything is in the future, as long as I can think of a good enough explanation. If one of my characters faces an impossible challenge, I can just "invent" the technology to get them through it. Kind of lazy, I know. But fun!

Re: Tell me why you write the genre you write.14 Years AgoI write sci-fi/ fantasy and horror. Why? Because it is my escape. I live enough reality everyday I wake up for my regular 9 to 5.

Re: Tell me why you write the genre you write.14 Years AgoI write pop culture because it's what I know and understand. I always throw a psychological element in as human behaviour fascinates me. What makes us act like we do. And I know I cannot possibly experience everything, so I write as a way to explore.

Re: Tell me why you write the genre you write.14 Years AgoI write fantasy because it's the only genre listed that fits. It's actually more romance/fantasy/supernatural/spiritualism etc.
My novels basically cover New Age concepts, as well as some truths from all the different religions of the world, in a backdrop of fantasy and symbolism. It's just what I'm into I suppose. Quite honestly, I think my genre is completely unique - there should be a new genre name created solely for it! lol But what would it be called? How do you combine romance, fantasy and spiritualism in one word? Makes you think, doesn't it? lol |
