The Painted Girl(poem)11 Years AgoThe painted girl/Walks the streets by night,/Eagerly scanning faces/Of the opposite sex/.Her wares -/she must sell tonight/to buy life/for her ailing child./ Two hours past midnight /"No takers./( she knew not when/her youth gave her the slip/When the fine lines appeared )/Good looks being/a prerequisite of her trade,/some more make-up/should do the trick,/she thinks./And proceeds to apply/some more more powder,/some more mascara/some more lipcolour/( all of the cheapest make)/to her already/caked up face./Desperately she prays/for a taker/Perhaps some perfum/And proceeds to spray/One of dubious make./Still no taker./She fumbles/inside her rexine bag/for her talisman./A flicker of hope/A man approaching./He is coming her way./Her spirits soar./Tonight her child/will sleep peacefully./ The man draws near./He looks familiar/ Perhaps a former beau./Standing besides her/ he whispers./Her painted face turns ashen./He has brought news/news of her child/her child has gone to sleep/ -----Eternally. s.
