Underground Writers Network Forum Challenge of the Week ~ #17
Challenge of the Week ~ #1717 Years AgoWe are still waiting for the previous voted member to post his piece so that we can feature it. In between, here goes the new challenge.
I named this one: Serendipitous Similes. In both, poetry and prose, we recur to metaphors quite often to embed our pieces with imagery. Yet, similes are just as beautiful and most of us have a hard time getting around to them. Just in case you are not too familiar with them, a simile is when a writer compares one thing to another, then explains the comparison in more depth. Here is a sample simile that might be found in a poem. His face was like a book. Good similes are expanded on though...they're not usually just one-liners in poetry. Below is the book simile, as expanded on in William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, Act I: Read o'er the volume of young Paris' face, And find delight writ there with beauty's pen; Examine every married lineament, And see how one another lends content; And what obscured in this fair volume lies Find written in the margin of his eyes. This precious book of love, this unbound lover, To beautify him, only lacks a cover. The challenge consists in writing a piece either in verse or prose, using at least five similes that you will post at the beginning of the piece. For example: - apathy is like a needle - jealousy was like a tavern - wit is like a card game And then you will develop them in your piece. No more than 300 words for prose, and no more than 5 verses if you choose to create a poem. You have time to post your pieces here until Tuesday morning. Voting will begin Tuesday afternoon until Wednesday. Have fun! |

[no subject]17 Years AgoI was reluctant to post this here since I don't have time to edit it. I feel like crap, just got out of work. I will find some time to edit soon...I'll be reviewing tomorrow...hopefully unless the office steals some more of my time.
*The opposites attract* It started as a spark. Which came to be, By two wires. A positive and a negative. Two opposing forces came together. Fed the blaze, like water... on an oil fire. Took both elements higher. *Passion turns to love* Energy can't be destroyed. Only transformed. When their individual energies died. Something else was born. *Love into unity* Positive and negative currents. Created this fire. What does it burn on? It's fueled by desire. What ever it is, it took both elements higher. And they are no longer positive and negative. Just electricity. One single bolt... of lightning. |

[no subject]17 Years AgoHomeless
Sorrow seeped from the cabin As we ascended to 35,000 feet. The feeling crystallized in the vapor trail - Like a trail of frozen tears... I couldn't hide in seat 13A The number prevented comfort, the shiny bronze plaque above shimmered like a glimmering black sun going down. Where was I going? Where have I come from? I often feel like an indigent saleseman - If only i could sell myself to a home, rather than buy one... Mother cried, Dad cried, sister cried. I cried, but they never saw - The goodbye came and went. It was like leaving your kid at the daycare the first time. The catharsis was the coldest blow The longing for home before landing Suddenly lost it's effect on departure - Like an anticipated weight, Falling cold and dead to the earth... I have no home anymore. -B |
