Underground Writers Network Forum Is Poetry dead?
Is Poetry dead?11 Years AgoNot only poetry, but literature, too. I dont think poetry is dead, but it's rather close, and Man Ray once said (on dadaism, but I think it applies to poetry and lit too, just replace dada with your chosen writing form)
"Why? Who cares? Who doesn't care? Dada is dead. Or is Dada still alive We cannot revive something that is alive just as we cannot revive any- thing that is dead. Is Dada dead? Is Dada alive? Dada is. Dadaism." Views? |

Re: Is Poetry dead?11 Years AgoPoetry is in the slums, but it's not dead. Think of the possibilities! Youtube, Soundcloud, Podcast, ect. Be the man behind the machine.Poetry has been culturally marginalized in the past. The novelty effect is brewing a new storm. We just have to let go of formal ways of expressing ourselves.

Re: Is Poetry dead?11 Years AgoI agree that poetry is simply poetry. People have tried to persecute it in the past. In the future new and sinister attacks have began, like the newly made cliche' that all young poets are terrible. This kind of thing may seem like an international disenchantment towards poetry but I like to think these snide remarks fall short. Because no matter what poetry is poetry, reminds me of my favorite V for Vendetta quote;
"Beneath this mask there is more than flesh. Beneath this mask there is an idea, Mr. Creedy, and ideas are bulletproof." |

Mundanity11 Years AgoIt's more like it became mundane. Due to the advancement of technology, poetry is just not as entertaining as it used to be. We have game consoles left and right that have the same plot line, characters, settings, and gameplay. It's the stunning visual effects and aesthetically pleasing designs of the characters and settings that make or break the games available today. Sure, you could experiment poetry, but I think it already reached the very peak of the summit when it comes to entertainment value.

Re: Is Poetry dead?11 Years AgoIn response to what's been written about technology, and while it's definitely true,
poetry is, if I may borrow a term from the writer William Gibson,"Lo-Tech"....Because in the face of all that our modern society represents, and that include our laptops and word processing software, there is still something very real and sublime about a pen and a notebook, and pouring one's self out onto that paper, and feeling you've made a connection there. So no, poetry is not dead, it's just say like the difference between AM and FM, still just as real, just as loud. Just serves a different purpose that not everyone is tuned into. Their loss. Im my not always humble opinion. Into the night... Mark |

Re: Is Poetry dead?11 Years AgoSure, you can pour all your emotions and everything sentimental to poetry; but since it's not as entertaining as it used to be, it's, in a way, a dying art. The reason poetry flourished in the past was because it was entertaining to everyone. Nowadays, only a handful of literate people truly enjoy poetry. If we could work something out and make it interesting enough that everyone would stop for a second and read poetry, then and only then would we be able to say that poetry is alive. For the time being, however, it's a dying form of expressive literature.

Re: Is Poetry dead?11 Years AgoPoetry seems to be dying, but I hope it will never do. And I believe it won't for I think people need it. And it is nice to have poetry in the culture of every civilization put in one of the highest places, at the top maybe. Through poetry we can show true, meaningful feelings in a figurative way, much better than with a story. This is simply what I believe. |

Re: Is Poetry dead?11 Years AgoNO ,it won't be ever...! its just that people are loosing interest in it day by day. its the outcome of the materialistic attitude which growing in today's lifestyle...People are having emotions which they are unable to feel ,express and enhance.they find movies, games more entertaining but don't like to read and feel poems. It happens because their lifestyle needs fast entertainment. But there are many people who love poetry just like us....and as long we are here poetry won't dead .

Re: Is Poetry dead?11 Years AgoIt is like bell bottom jeans, they were great in the 60'sand some of the 70's but lost their appeal. They made a comeback on the 90's and mid 2000's and now they are more boot cut than anything. If it had lost its luster fret not for it will rise again better than before.
Want not Have not Need not It all comes out in the wash. |

“Church”
behold the RAW power of the word complex and
heavy liken to a brick falling from the sky or at some times soft like the
painted pouting lips of blonde haired gypsy queens ready to enlighten you're
life in the whisper of touch I bow to the wranglers of wild prose and composers
of precise poetics for you art the philosophers of rhythm while dually acting
as madmen tramps sleeping in an alley and screaming from rooftops syllabic
prescriptions for all to use as needed until the anxiety of existence is
expelled once and for all in a grand finale of frantic scribbles written in a
frenzy by unknown wordsmiths exhaling ingenious English for this is it the
wonder of the written word my only true religion despite style and/or
definition anything of value will be written under the moniker
"Composition.................................................................................................................nope
