Underground Writers Network Forum Character help?
Character help?13 Years AgoThis is something I seem to run into a lot. I always have a hard time with character development and creation. x.x I'm just wondering if anyone can offer tips on this and maybe I can get some insight on the important characters that I need and let the rest of them come later...
I really want to become a better writer but being disabled has its heavy advantages. I'm too emotionally unstable to attend a college, even community college because of the amount of problems I have had with school systems and my disabilities. So I've been trying so hard to learn from others who write but its not as easy as I thought it would be. I really need a rolemodel I guess. :( |

Re: Character help?13 Years AgoDon't knwo if this will be helpful, but this works for me. Since I know everyone is different feel free to dismiss this.
When I create a character I think of someone I know that would fit the characters personality in a general sense. It's always easier to write about something you know, so why not the people you know? If there isn't a person with that general personality, I tend to write down that char's characteristics, and refer back to them while I write about them. I know, not much, but I hope what little knowledge i have helps. Good Luck! |

Re: Character help?13 Years AgoI understand completely. I am the same way (emotional and college wise).
You can base the character off of other things just make it your own with personality twists and quirks. My character Royce Davidson, for example, is (or rather was) a high ranking 'Death Guardian' aka Grim Reaper. His appearance is loosely based on some anime characters but his story and past is uniquely his own. He is addicted to sugar and is bound to the book's main character Cassandra Holloway. Her grandfather Ziv Daiku was his partner who is the only Human on the council. Sometime about 18 years ago (story wise) he went crazy and was sent into a prison center. Solitary confinement for the most part. His story is the most detailed since he was human (centuries ago) but was chosen to be a grim reaper upon his death. Yes, people (of various races) with the right parameters are chosen to be death guardians in my book's universe. What I am trying to say is that you can make a original character based on what you experience in your everyday life. I hope this has helped some people. Another good way is to listen to music. Sometimes the lyrics help form the character. |

Re: Character help?13 Years AgoSince all characters must have a part and purpose in the plot, try to think of some traits that would fit and perhaps some background story for each. I usually write a paper for each character, things they like and don’t like, how they react in different situations, when
encountering other characters and what they think about other
characters.
hmm... I also ask my friends how they think the character should behave and sometimes a drawing from my more talented friends. Sometimes a good picture in mind can really make the difference =) |

Re: Character help?12 Years AgoWhen names are thought of, can names with the same first letter on two main characters, Jess or Jessica and Jax or Jackson, be too much?
I write entire chapters on characters. It just seems they need to be known well. I seem to take characteristics from people I have known. Then, I just add where I want them to be in contrast to the main character. Faith |
