Underground Writers Network Forum Genres: Which do you write? re..
Genres: Which do you write? read?14 Years AgoI write young adult fantasy (really fringes on just being general fiction, though), and recently I'm working on a science fiction mystery with a generous supernatural/paranormal element, besides having written poetry out the wazzoo for a few years. Oddly I generally shy away from these genres when picking things to read. I mostly read classic literature, and Stephen King's Dark Tower-related materials; I tend to read general fiction when I pick a random interesting-sounding book up at the library. What about you all? Do you write what you read? Do you think someone can write well in a genre they've barely read? |

Genres14 Years AgoI read everything. I don't discriminate against any book, no matter the genre. If it doesn't put me to sleep then it is awesome. As for writing... I tend to write more romance stories (most of which are works in progress). I am trying to expand, though, so I've been doing more fantasy/scifi stuff, adventure, and even horror. I've been trying out types of poetry too. Let's see how it goes... :D

Re: Genres: Which do you write? read?14 Years AgoI read what ever sounds good to me depending upon my mood, but my favorite is paranormal or fantasy. It can be with or without romance and I love horror as well. I write about what sparks my thought process. I prefer to write paranormal or supernatural, but I do have a huge variety when it comes to stories. My poems are all over the place. You never know what kind of poem I am going to write. Poetry for me is venting my pent up emotions or sometimes life just triggers ideas in my head.

Re: Genres: Which do you write? read?14 Years AgoI love to read fantasy with a realistic-ness to it (i.e. Harry Potter, Pendragon) and animal fiction (i.e. The Sight, Firebringer). I write animal fiction, no questions asked. I hate writing about people xD I tend to write for young adults, ages 12-18 about.

Re: Genres: Which do you write? read?14 Years Ago
I always write teen/young adult comedy. I also read teen novels, although some of them can be
ridiculous.

Re: Genres: Which do you write? read?14 Years AgoI write pop culture. There's something about the seedy side of life that interests me. I don't know, I like the harsh, brutal reality of it all.
I read non-fiction (well, mostly) Histories and such. I do read the odd fictional novel, like the Dexter series. I've become so disillusioned with the industry that I just stick to non-fiction. |

Re: Genres: Which do you write? read?14 Years AgoI write mostly general fiction with some crime and/or romance sprinkled in on occasion. My current project has a medieval theme, which has been very interesting. I love the strong female protagonist. I work with the foster care system so sometimes I write about what I see there.
I mostly read nonfiction- history and the like. Howard Zinn's A People's History of the United States is a must for anyone, American or otherwise. I also enjoy the occasional thriller (I blame my mother), and I'm in love with Beowulf. So beautiful :) |

Re: Genres: Which do you write? read?14 Years AgoI'm new here, so this is my salute (hello!) and introduction. Of course, by way of reading, classics have my heart, thrillers give me goosebumps, YA makes me giddy, and fantasy/urban stories will keep me coming back for more. Favorite authors include: Dickens, Dean Koontz, Barbara Hambly, Robert Asprin, Madeleine L'Engle, Sid Fleischman, Cynthia Voigt, Bruce Coville and so many more. Don't be shy. Say "hi" back. I'm looking for friends. =) |

Re: Genres: Which do you write? read?14 Years AgoHonestly I'll read just about anything if it catches my attention, or just looks interesting, or it can teach me something I find of value, or encourage me, or relate to it in some way, or if its at all stimulating...as for my writing, mostly alot of poetry.
I write some short stories, and most everything has a sort of "dark/erotic" undertone. Has since I started writing, very young.

Re: Genres: Which do you write? read?13 Years AgoIm a big fan of sci fi and post apoc as well as horror. I occassionaly hit up the book to movie works like Rules of Attraction and High Fidelity, which generally turn out really good. As for writing, I prefer the post apoc setting and the occassional horror. I know I havent posted many horror out there, im more of a psychological horror guy myself.

Re: Genres: Which do you write? read?13 Years Agoi read whatever i can find at bookshops. then sometimes i try and write my own story in the genre that i've just read.
but mainly i read anything that looks interesting and is fiction. Right now i'm into murder mysteries, but i have read the twilight saga (and i liked it) and the eragon series. So my reading ranges form whatever genre i feel like reading. :)
