Cleaning out junk files and defragmenting the hard drive17 Years AgoLocal Settings Folder The local settings folder is hidden by default in Windows XP. In order to access it first click on drive C: then go to Documents and settings Left click on the main users folder. Then click on tools at the top of window Then click on Folder Options Then Click on View Then put a check by Show hidden files and folders Locate the folder Local Settings Right click on it and send it to desktop to create a short cut Then re-do the above steps to re-hide hidden files and folders On the desktop open the Shortcut to local settings folder and do the following To do this in each folder (Temp, Temporary Internet Files and History) after you open each Click on Edit at the top of window Left click on Select all Move cursor over a highlighted area and right click Left click on Delete Click YES to delete Close out All of these items are just temporary junk that you computer stores. Deleting them wont hurt a thing. Index Dat. files are hard to get rid of because a program thats running is using them. Be sure to defragment the hard drive after deleting them. This can be located by clicking on StartProgramsAccessoriesSystem toolsDisk Defragmentor. If you dont defrag you system every few days, or clean out the junk files it can hinder your systems performance greatly. Tool Tip If some items wont delete reboot your computer and try again. Some running programs will not be deleted. You can also left click and hold button and drag a line around all of the objects and right click and delete them this way. This is helpful if you have one file that it cant delete such as a loaded printer temp file. You just drag a line around all files but the one it says you cant delete, by left clicking and holding while dragging around files then let go-then right click on highlighted files-left click on delete.. |
