Story Craft Forum The sincerest Form

Hi there,

I read a lot about craft, especially short stories, and one of the best ways of learning how to apply that knowledge is to imitate. Painters and composers learn by reproducing great works, doing so helps internalize craft.

Theres a good book by DelBanco that says the same, "The Sincerest Form" - study the greats and have a go at what they did - its a great way of learning the craft.

My own story The Kirby Guest House imitates James Joyce, as well as the linked style.

Thought I'd pass that tip on craft along.

Good point!

A good writer will study what others have done before them or are doig currently. It is looking at the various styles, methods, and touches that helps to bring out the unique voice in the writer producing original styles, methods, and touches.
