A combination of factors come into play when I judge good writing.  The writing's gotta be simple.  Poe's style isn't the most simple, but he's an exception.  It's gotta say something about life, and what make's life worth living... this is probably the toughest part when it comes to judging modern literature.. if its even called that anymore.  For me, one amazing book that does have it all is probably not even fiction, a book called Manchild In The Promised Land.
