Alessander's Mad Poets (AMP!) Forum Poetry: the Journal Discussion..
Poetry: the Journal Discussion14 Years AgoDoes anyone else here subscribe to Poetry? It's a monthly poetry journal, and probably the most "authoritative" journal out there, founded by Harriet Monroe circa 1912. The first half is usually poems, ranging from translations, manifestos, to lost poems of famous authors, and even poets discussing their own poems, believe it or not. The second half is always commentary, essays on the state of poetry, aesthetics, or even rants on previous issues. I usually find the second half more stimulating, which ought to tell you how I feel about contemporary poetry lol anyhow, if there's anything in a certain issue you want to discuss or share, vent on this thread :) Just notify us which Issue and Year ur referring to, and let the intellectual debates begin!

Re: Poetry: the Journal Discussion14 Years AgoI just recently ordered two back issues to check out before I fully subscribed. Would you say it's worth it, then?

I'd say it's worth it for two reasons: one, the commentary is usually very good. Often times, it out shines the poetry, esp if you like critical theory, or just like hearing what other writers think about their craft. Two, even if the poetry is sometimes lacking, it's still a good idea for us as writers to get a glimpse of the contemporary poetry landscape. I know sometimes I get stuck in a rut reading authors who have long been dead, so it's nice to get some fresh air from time to time, even if it's not a divine wind lol It's relatively inexpensive too, and always announces some competitions, winners, workshops, and retreats, though I would recommend the mag Poets & Writers for all that. |

I'll definitely consider this then. I've been looking for a magazine to subscribe to and, besides Glimmer Train, this was the only other one I was seriously looking at. I've been rather content with my ever-growing collection of books and never really thought about getting a subscription until recently. |

Re: Poetry: the Journal Discussion14 Years Agoglimmer train is more for short stories than poetry, and imo, not very good short stories.
