0-hour has arrived.  The semi-finalists are being notified even as I type.

Here's the url for my entry

I suppose I can post my entry here... though I suspect my sensitive ego is not ready for improoovement suggestions yet.

Congratulations to everyone who made it!

This sucks...

The boat has left, and I missed it.

I'm afraid you're not going to get a URL from me. I didn't make the cut.

To say I'm disappointed is a complete understatement. I'm crushed.

I've read some of the summaries from a few of the stories that did make it, and a few of them left me scratching my head. I have no idea how these were voted in and mine was left out in the cold. Call me bitter if you want, but my work is ten times better than the cliched, plagerized crap I saw posted up there.

I'm very disappointed in ABNA. I'm smitten to complain, especailly with how poorly this event has been run thus far... but have so far resisted. Those who didn't make it didn't even get the courtesy of a rejection letter. Real classy there, Amazon.

I'm gonna have to start over again. Start sending out queries and all that crap.

Good luck Leah, hope you go a lot farther than the crappy summaries I read up there.

Peter, if you didn't get a rejection letter, you shouldn't give up hope.  It took weeks for some people to get the notification that they'd been accepted the first time.

Yes, but this time you can /check/.

The rejection email will be a nice confirmation, though.

The word on the website is that there are just over 800 listed. Maybe they are making some last minute decisions and you will show up later? Let's keep our fingers crossed!

Oh...I'm in, too.

When you count up the total number of excerpts posted, there are only 836 up there. Have they not come to a decision yet on some of them? While I realize they didn't have to post a full 1000, but to come over 160 short? Seems a little cold to me.

The fact that I have gotten no response is the reason why I've resisted the temptation to shout my protests from the roof tops. I am holding out hope, but the wait is already killing me. The last thing I wanted to do was wait longer...

Chrys -- I know the "list" is somewhere on Amazon, but do you have the url? I can't find it in those crazy threads on the forum.

Doug -- Congrats!

Pinocchio is Punching You:

Good luck to those who made this cut, and best wishes to the rest. Coming from a guy with almost 350 rejections and only a handful of sales: most stuff doesn't find a home on the first try. Keep at it.

Alex.

Got mine a good half hour after the first shouts of joy rang out.  I sweated out each minute, seriously, been then saw my title on the Fantasy page and received my email.

Here's my link:

Cheers to all those souls hardy enough to have entered the contest in the first place.

The best to each and everyone to come.

Looks like I missed the boat too!  Oh well, like I said before, the book I've written since ABNA even started is much better and one I'd prefer to promote over the one I entered. I was "amazed" at the number of people who did receive a rejection email.  I have not received a yay or nay as of yet.

I might be wrong, but I think the 860 that are up are the end of the semi-finalists.  If they posted any more, wouldn't those be at a disadvantage having missed out on some days to get read and reviewed?  Plus, it makes sense for Amazon to narrow it a bit more just by choice.

Like others, I haven't been too happy with how the contest has been run.  I'm still amazed they aren't promoting it big time on their home page.  But, I don't have time to dwell on it.  There are queries to write and promotions to put together.  I read somewhere that 90% of a writer's life is rejection.  So, no big deal.  I can stop obsessing daily over the threads, learn from it, and get on with my writing.

Best to all who made it!

Congrats to those who made it! :)

I didn't get any email, but my entry isn't listed anywhere among those available, so I assume I didn't make the cut. Which is no reason to give up though. If somebody doesn't fall the first time, you've got to hit harder on the next swing. Learn, improve, revise. It would speak of a clear lack of determination and conviction to just give up, so I hope everyone else just pulls through and keeps going as well. Or as every racing team manager in every motorsport tells every driver, no matter the position or lap time: "Keep pushing." :)

“I’ve missed more than 9000 shots in my career. I’ve lost almost 300 games. 26 times, I’ve been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.”
- Michael Jordan

"Winners lose much more often than losers. So if you keep losing but you're still trying, keep it up! You're right on track."
- Matthew Keith Groves

"Success is the ability to go from failure to failure without losing your enthusiasm."
- Sir Winston Churchill

Keep pushing.

I apparently didn't make the cut, but some others did that have me--like Peter--scratching my head and wondering if Ebeneezer Scrooge was my reviewer. LOL

The thing is, I know my book is damn good. If the Amazon reviewer/s can't see that, not my fault. They only read 5,000 words. I have 170,000 more they missed out on (yep, it's long).

I'm dusting off my query letters that have been in cyber-storage, and getting out my red pencil to find those typos I know are there, and I'm taking it to a more deserving venue. The contest was great, but it reminded me a little of American Idol: amateurs voting on amateurs. As soon as I saw that in the contest info, I thought, "That can't be good!"

And if I can't get an agent or a publisher, I'll publish the silly thing myself. There will always be traditional publishing houses, but I think they need to look out below, because a lot of quality writers are POD publishing a lot of quality work; they may need to rethink the way they're selecting.

Seriously folks, all who didn't make the cut: If James Patterson can be published, SO CAN YOU!!! (sorry you JP fans, but his writing is mediocre at best).

Cheers,

Sharon

Sharon, I couldn't agree with you more -- there's so much junk being sold these days, any of us could do better.

I've felt a little funny about the contest for the very reasons you mention, but on the whole it doesn't seem much less fair than the usual querying/slush pile procedure.  It's just that it's public, so easier to hold up to criticism or even ridicule.

I've looked at some of the entries in my category, and they're competent at best, mediocre or downright ill-written and unoriginal at worst.  Nothing shines.  I'm sure some do, but I haven't found 'em.  (Except for mine, of course. <winks>)

Anyhow, I want to see that PW review.  That's what I'm in this for -- something I can quote to an agent in a query.

Just a note -- it's easy to say this contest sucks if you didn't make the cut, and if you did, you might wish to defend it.  I made it, and I say it sucks, just like all of traditional publishing sucks.  But if it's an avenue to getting published, or at least a learning experience, then I'm more for it than against it.

My excerpt is posted at The book is a comic novel entitled Not From Around Here.

Good luck, everyone.
