Tips for writing historical poems and stories7 Years Ago1) Research, research, research
If you aren't going to bother to at least try and make your story or poem historically accurate then what is the point in writing in a historical setting? Readers who enjoy historical fiction works enjoy them because they seem as though this could have actually taken place in that time period. For example; you wouldn't find Lady Margaret from the 1700s painting her nails on a night in... 2) Allow your characters to interact with their historical surroundings So you have chosen to set your book/poem in a historical setting? Now it's time to have fun with the culture and aspects of everyday life in that time period. I love this one, although it can be hard to make your story/poem interesting if you just focus on the time period - make sure that whatever your character is doing that it is also a part of the story/ poem and that it is not just there for the sake of it. 3) Let your characters explore the time period This could help you to mention more about the time periods culture, diet or hairstyles without becoming tedious for your readers. You are providing readers of your works with historical details, but not forcing it all onto them at once. 4) The internet can be your best friend I am not going to lie, I use the internet a lot for research, and it is incredibly useful. However, it is not the only thing I use for historical details about time periods I am writing about, I use other methods to research such as; books, novels, documentaries, and even movies (take movies and novels with a grain of salt as they are not always entirely historically accurate). 5) Don't get too caught up with making sure everything is historically accurate Yes, historical accuracy is what we writers strive for in life, but it is also stressful if you try to do this all the time - after all, this is your story to tell and your poem to weave, if you feel a particular historical detail looks out of place, take it out, no one is going to mind (unless of course, it is a major aspect of the time period you are writing about). 6) Enjoy yourself Try your best to make your works historically accurate so that readers can be immersed in the time period, but don't fret about this too much, because no matter who you are readers are still going to find things that you have left out or missed (which can be a blessing and a curse, depending on how you choose to take it). At the end of the day, this is your story/poem and only you can write it, yes, you. Have fun, research where you need to, and just go with it, no matter how much you choose to research into your time period it is still going to be an achievement and something that you have written, be proud of that. |

Tips for writing historical poems and stories7 Years Ago1) Research, research, research
What is the point of setting your book/poem in a historical setting if you aren't going to make it at least somewhat historically accurate? Adding in historical facts or events make for an interesting read, and will attract more readers. Not only that but as a historical writer you are aiming your book/poem at readers who enjoy history, satisfy their thirst for history and research your facts about the time period you are writing in. Then not only will you be learning but so will some of your readers. 2) Let the characters explore the historical setting Intertwine facts and historical events with your plot or poem, not only can this aid you in coming up with subplots or events for your characters to take part in but it adds depth to your work. You will find that once you start exploring the time period and getting your characters to take part in everyday life of people of your chosen time period that historical accuracy will tend to follow almost naturally. 3) The internet can be your best friend I use the internet for almost all of my research, and I must admit it can be easier than looking through a book for the information you want. However, be warned that not everything on the internet is historically accurate, and there may be websites that mention similar topics but with very different views. Using books, documentaries and movies are also ways of expanding your knowledge on the time periods culture, clothing, and hairstyles, just be sure to take information found in movies and on the internet with a grain of salt. 4) Don't fret over complete historical accuracy After all, this is your story to tell or your poem to weave. At the end of the day be sure to use lots of historical facts and events (if you want or need to) but don't feel as though you have to be completely historically accurate. This is after all a poem/ story and while readers will be looking for accuracy and knowledge in your chosen time period, don't stop yourself from writing your story/poem just to try and include every single fact you have found out about that time period. 5) Enjoy writing At the end of the day, no matter how hard you try to be historically accurate your readers are always going to find something that is wrong. And that's ok, we are all human, we make mistakes. So just be sure to enjoy writing and your readers are sure to love reading your works. |

Book Reviews Please7 Years AgoI have written two books on here that I would really like some reviews on. One is much longer than the other and I know people tend to shy away from really long reads. I would really appreciate it if you would give them a chance and tell me what you think.
Thank you so much. |

Will review for every review7 Years AgoHello all ... new to Writers Cafe and looking forward to reading you and offering my personal reviews of your submissions. All I ask is that you review me in return if you would be so kind to do so.
Right now I am in the "beginning" of a short story [Ishrat's Journey Home] and would be eager for some feedback on especially if you feel the tone of the story would be an immediate "capture" on your curiosity to read more or if you think I might need to kick it up.
This short story is my first submission to any writer community site.
