What do you want in a review?

I just joined the site today. I am a retired newspaper journalist, and am excellent with the English language.

So, what do you want in a review? Just opinions? Or do you want comments on grammar, punctuation, word usage, etc?

I can help with passive vs active voice, grammar, punctuation, etc.

As you probably know, there are thousands upon thousands of 'authors' seeking publication, so in order for your story to be selected, it must be outstanding. That means no spelling errors, no punctuation errors, and so on.

So, let me know if you'd like just my feelings about your work or if you'd like a really in depth review.

I just joined this group today, too, and hope to make some good friends.

I like people to point out parts they liked, why they liked it, stuff like that. I think my favorite thing people comment about is if they can relate to it, how, and if i brings out emotions from them, protective of a character, pity for a person, etc. I always get a bit irked when people comment on my grammar, unless it's really terrible and needs to be pointed out (aka using You're instead of your, which I haven't mixed up yet lol).

Honesty is the most important thing in a review. And me, personally, I don't care what you point out as long as you honestly think it's worth pointing out. Grammar is important, but as long as your %80 grammatically correct (meaning that you take writing seriously and try) than grammatical errors can be fixed easily if ever published. The trick, in POV, in terms of grammar and spelling, making a mistake isn't a big deal, just be legible. That's what's important, whether or not you are legible. In terms of grammar and spelling. Mistakes can be made without it effecting the content and one should only worry about exacts if one is trying to publish that piece.

If you are trying to publish or about to submit to a publisher you should definitely get somebody, such are yourself, to proof-read.

But, I digress. I would like honesty, tell me what you think needs to be said and I will tell you what I think needs to be said and we'll get along perfectly!

M. Super,

P.S. I'm new, too! This is my second or third week or something like that (I have a 1 year old son so time is very relative).

I want people to be critical, on grammar, characters, world building, etc. I've written some things in other places, and I never really got the feedback I needed. It's also nice when people tell me what I've done wrong, then say what they think I should do to fix it. Sometimes I have a case of being unable to see the forest through the trees, or however that saying goes, and I can't figure out the solution to a problem because I'm so deep inside of it that I can't see the obvious. On the other side of the coin, it's also helpful for people to say what they like about my writing, so that I know what I'm doing right, and can continue doing that. I guess in short, I like it when people tell it straight and, without sugarcoating it or trying to make it seem nicer than it is.

I want a full detailed review on everything, because I want to someday publish at least one of my books that I will write. BUT I need examples and how to fix them. :3

I want to be a better writer.  I prefer reviews that make that possible.  Critical, but not cruel.

For me this is the most important aspect of writing. I will like to work with you, working with you will improve my writing a great deal. I aspire to be a good writer. Criticism is like manure that smells bad but it makes vegetation grows well. I have a number of writing that i would like you to review.

Thanks
