ConflictsA Lesson by PhillitupLooking at the right conflicts.Everyone says (in relation to their conflict) that it goes with the characters, the story. How can a stories conflict not fit the story? Easy. When it doesn't fit the time, place, characters, or purpose. Take a step back from saving the world from an evil witch. Why does the witch want to take over or defeat the world? What are her purposes, sole motivations. How was her childhood? Are witches outcasts in your world? Are they hated? Shunned? If you find that you character doesn't correspond with the conflict (aka the witch having a great childhood with loving parents and being seen as a talented, smart, and pretty person) you have to get rid of either one or the other. Exercise: In your Writers Journal ask of your characters and conflict of your most recent work these above questions (of some variety) and more. Test and trick them. Does it fit in all directions? If yes: perfect If no: fix it Comments |
