OverviewA Lesson by MilaIntro to world building.Overview Hello to you all and welcome to the High Fantasy University! Don't worry, education here is free of charge. My name is Mila, and I am going to be your instructor. Be warned: I am crazy perky, my southern accent shows through the computer and coffee runs through my veins more than blood. High Fantasy is, in my opinion, an underrated genre. Tolkien was among the first to pave the way with his spectacular Middle Earth. Robert Jordan followed not long after with his masterpiece, Wheel of Time, and, of course, how can we forget A Song of Ice and Fire (A.K.A., Game of Thrones the T.V. Series) by the awesomely talented George R.R. Martin? High Fantasy is the one genre where we can let loose with a no-holds barred imagination overload, and it all starts with the world that you build. So how do we go about it? Good God there's just so much you want to do! Firstly, you have to come with a world and then chip away at it until you have a refined setting from which you place your characters. Then you have to find a culture and depth. It can get pretty overwhelming, and that's why I'm here. :) I spent a good two-three years just building my own world for my story, so I can honestly say that it's not easy. But, then again, what good things ever are? I can tell you that it's loads of fun to do and, if done right, it can be pretty magical! I promise, I run a very organized lesson. "This ain't my first rodeo" with teaching High Fantasy, as it were. I'm no 100% expert on this, but I can honestly say that I am do have an idea of what I'm talking about! :) For this reason, I have a strictly pre-organized "lesson plan", if you will that, I follow. It's something I've knocked together when I was world building for all those years way back when. Ergo, any advice on how to run my lessons will be politely ignored. :) It's not to be mean, I swear, but because I've covered all my bases, and I like to stick to an agenda without any diversions! The first lesson that I will post will go into more depth of the different worlds that one could build. I hope that these lessons are helpful to you and, of course, all questions are welcome! :) Good luck and write on! <3, Mila Comments |
