The fundamental W's

The fundamental W's

A Lesson by The Ugly Rose
"

You must know what you're talking about before you babble.

"

You've taken your first steps on the yellow brick road, only this time we're not going to the wizard. No, we're going into a new, fascinating, mysterious world that no one has ever encountered. Where is it? Underneath our very feet! But before you can continue, you must learn about what you want to tell. All of these subjects will be discussed in great detail in later lessons. There just simply isn't enough room here to do it effectively.

Where does the story take place? (one, or several places)

Who is it centralized around? (can include a subplot)

When does it take place? (what era/year)

What is the main conflict? (again, can include a subplot)

Why does the conflict happen / why does the protagonist get involved?

If you have trouble answering these questions, or if you want help with developing it further, read on through the next few lessons for some help. By the end of the course, you will have a full fledged fictional world to move your characters around in as if they were Barbie's in a doll house.
