Feeling better. Hope to get some new stuff up soon. Got Netflix and this distracts me.

About Me

I'm a lawyer by education, but mostly I've worked in ski towns and hung out there. Sometimes doing some pretty menial jobs. I was on a ski team for a while, and I got to show my stuff in competition, but then I got too old for that and the younger women ate my lunch. So now I'm just a mountain bum. But so are all my friends, so it's OK.

We live in Colorado and run a small lodge at 10,000 feet. We live in a 100 year old drafty cabin and we do some pretty extreme things to keep from freezing in the winter. Our water was frozen off for 15 days last winter. But it is really a spectacular place.

All last week it was incredibly smoky from the fires. I could not see the peaks and trees and hills a quarter mile away were almost hidden. You could smell the smoke.

Started snowing two days ago and has been snowing on and off ever since. The air is now clear and the peaks are all white.

Funny, the day before the first snow storm it was 85 degrees here in the afternoon. Winter came on suddenly this year.

Cold and rainy last night. Mist on the mountains early this morning. When it cleared the peaks were snow covered. Had first fire of the year in the woodstove last Monday. Looking forward to winter even though recent injury prevents me from skiing. First time in 16 years I will not have a pass to the mountain. Will spend the winter sitting by the fire, drinking tea and trying to write.

Trying to write a gun control piece for the Denver Post. Not close to finishing. The legal history of owning fully automatic weapons is very complicated and I want to have this down before submitting.

A newspaper in Kansas just purchased my short story "Tornado". They will publish on the 25th, the anniversary of the 1955 disaster.

Still cold. Fresh ice in the shadow of the car. Wind is blowing hard and cabin is cold. It's at least 100 years old and drafty. Quite ready for some summer weather. Sometime after Wednesday when I get paid I will travel to Idaho Springs and get my bicycle from storage. There are many nice trails for riding around here, if it ever stops snowing.

We got snow again this morning. Went out to clean the car windows and it was wonderful. Sticky, wet snow made the trees all white and it was warm enough to be out in your shirtsleeves. Mountains are all white. But I'm still ready for summer.
