About Me




William Clarence Marshall III bows before the eve of the winter solstice and makes his debut this evening at the Maryland Theatre. This evening also marks his professional debut thirty years ago. The 2007 Maryland season saw Mr. Marshall debut with the Maryland Symphony Orchestra in their 22nd annual Salute to Independence at Antietam National Battlefield under the baton of Elizabeth Schulze and performing The National Anthem for the 2007 Rawlings Fellowship Commencement at The Reginald F. Lewis Museum of Maryland African American History & Culture. In recent Maryland seasons he has appeared as Porgy in Porgy and Bess at Baltimore Lyric Opera and George Mason University, Baloo the Bear in the TheatreWorks USA production of The Jungle Book at Towson University and as Joe in Hal Prince�s Tony-award winning Broadway revival of ShowBoat at the Kennedy Center. Mr. Marshall returns to Hagerstown in January 2009 in a solo recital An African American Afternoon at the Washington County Museum of Fine Arts Concert Series. Elsewhere in 2007 he can be heard as the voice at appeared in A Listening Party: The Music of H. Leslie Adams at the Gregory L. Reese Theater, Kalliope Stage�s Fifth Birthday Celebration and the Community Counts Benefit Concert with the Anderson, Indiana Area Youth Chorale. Mr. Marshall recently made his Severance Hall debut with the Cleveland Orchestra and the Cleveland Orchestra Youth Orchestra, as narrator of Copland�s Lincoln Portrait. Recorded live as a special private-issue edition CD and broadcast on WCLV 104.9 FM. He previously narrated The Day of Music performance of the work in January 2007, with the Cleveland Orchestra Youth Orchestra as the bass soloist in Copland�s Old American Songs under the baton of Jayce Ogren. During the 2007 holiday season, Mr. Marshall appeared with the Warren Philharmonic Orchestra�s Thanksgiving Special! A Family Feast and WPO Children�s Concerts under the baton of Susan Davenny Wyner, Tri-C West�s production of Amahl and the Night Visitors as King Balthazar and the Cleveland Orchestra�s 2007/08 Musical / Holiday Rainbow Series: ALL ABOUT KWANZAA. In the Ohio area Mr. Marshall has performed in The Music of Jacques Brel at Kalliope Stage, Bartolo in Le Nozze di Figaro at Opera Western Reserve, The Tiniest Gift at Kalliope Stage, Porgy in Porgy and Bess at The Beck Center, Caiaphas in Jesus Christ Superstar at Porthouse Theatre and A to Z at Kalliope Stage. In recent seasons, he has bowed at Cleveland Contemporary Dance Theatre�s world premiere of Daughter of a Buffalo Soldier: The Life and Legacy of Marjorie Witt Johnson at Karamu Theatre. Cleveland Opera in Sweeney Todd and Don Giovanni, the Cleveland Pops under the baton of Carl Topilow and as King Balthazar in Amahl and the Night Visitors at Old Stone Church. He also appeared in the title role as General George Washington in Washington: The American Revolution at Bad Epitaph Theater and as Enoch Snow in Carousel for Kalliope Stage.

Mr. Marshall made his Carnegie Hall debut as the bass soloist in Beethoven�s Mass in C major with the New England Symphonic Ensemble in 2001. Additionally, he performed the role of Joe in Hal Prince�s Tony-award winning revival of ShowBoat on Broadway, the Kennedy Center and the Broadway national tour. He received acclaim for performances of Porgy in Porgy and Bess at the Jerusalem Music Festival with the Charleston Symphony Orchestra conducted by Stuart Malina. As Pooh-Bah in The Mikado at Utah Festival Opera with the Utah Festival Opera Orchestra conducted by Karen Keltner and Shields in the Opera Ebony production of Frederick Douglass with the Icelandic Symphony Orchestra conducted by Daniel Swift. In 2002, Mr. Marshall participated in the premiere of Jeremie Michael�s After Hours, A Song Cycle, a work inspired by the poems of Langston Hughes. A former Aspen Music Festival Opera Theater Fellow, he debuted as Bartolo in Le Nozze di Figaro with the Aspen Opera Festival Orchestra conducted by John DeMain. Mr. Marshall�s television appearances include singing the role of Parson Alltalk in excerpts from Scott Joplin�s Treemonisha, broadcast in Aida�s Brothers and Sisters: Black Voices In Opera, on PBS� Great Performances and the Making of Porgy and Bess for the Jerusalem Music Festival in a command performance for the late Israeli prime minister, Yitzhak Rabin. He also appeared as a featured soloist in An African-American Christmas, with Ruby Dee and the late Ossie Davis, for Vision TV and as a featured guest soloist on the Phil Donahue Show. He has sung the following roles in fully staged productions: Balthazar in Amahl and the Night Visitors, Bartolo in Le Nozze di Figaro, Carl Magnus in A Little Night Music, Colline in La Boheme, Don Alfonso in Cosi fan Tutte, Judge Turpin in Sweeney Todd and Sarastro in Die Zauberfl�te. In The Shadow Box Theatre�s, How The Turtle Got Its Shell: An African Tale, Mr. Marshall created the roles Nyame, The Sky God and Osebo, The Leopard. This work garnered an award for Notable Children�s recording by the American Library Association. In The Holiday Spirit his debut CD is available from �[email protected]� Marshall is a proud member of Actors� Equity Association, Canadian Actors� Equity Association and the American Guild of Musical Artists.
